In this photo you get a good sense how each surface 1x4 is screwed into each support 1x4. Basically, every crossing 1x4 gets a screw and finish washer. The oval ss screws are 1 3/4" in length. Also, note that the screw holes are aligned with the center points of each crossing 1x4 member.
