I have an 87 montauk 17' center console and want to install cleats on each side rail as close to the bow as possible. Where's the wood? Is this possible?

It is possible to install cleats on the hull? Yes. Is it recommended? No, not by many.

Have you seen this thread about Montauk and cleats?

I use my Montauk for towing alongside so I need cleats. The gunwale sticks out a few inches. I used 6 inch cleats and drilled into the fiberglass. I used a backing plate and flatwashers. The bolt goes from the top into the cleat and then the backing plate, washer and nut under the overhang. I used 3M5200 on all the fasteners and backing plate. The forward end just aft of the raised deck has 2 port and starboard, midship by the seat 2 P&S and aft P&S and you have 6 cleats, 3 on each side. They work fine for towing a boat alongside. I used the type of cleat that requires 2 fasteners on the centerline.

i also wanted to install cleats on my 17' montauk.
researched the wood locations and only had it on the bowflats at the non-skid area. there is a mood locating diagram in this site that is pretty good for info.
after researching this i opted to use the double norman pin on the bow and the d -hooks on the stern, to tie my boat up. i used stainless stell carbiners and spliced a loop into the end of 1/2" line and use this as my connections. i did the same for my spring line from the round eye on the stern intyerior.
