Typically I trailer my boat. I got the chance for a good dock space and took it.
How do I tie the boat, a 1987 Montauk 17, to the dock? No cleats are on the boat. The locations that I would add cleats; stern port, bow port, and mid port do not have any wood backing at the locations.
The bow does have wood on the flat "step area" but I'm not sure I want to invade that space.
Are there any suggestions for using the stern eyes and the bow double norman pin, including the use of a spring line?
I would discourage you from trying to install any cleats; they are not necessary and create tripping/snagging hazards.
I tie a Montauk like Guts and Phil do except that the mooring lines (with spliced eyes) are fixed to the lifting rings on the hull.
For anything but transient mooring, a spring line should be used. I just loop the eye spice around the forward stanchion of the side rail and run it forward to the first available cleat on the dock.
We use something slightly different. The first couple of pictures on our personal page show how we tie up on our floater (which is long & doesn't require a spring line). We use a spring hook that has a swivel eye that we take the looped end of the line thru and tie up the bitter end to the cleat on the dock. Unclip 1 line fore and aft and castoff. When you come back to the dock throw your fenders over the side, grab a line and clip on. You get a little better look at the spring clips (s/s) we use in pics 3 & 4. Our spare docklines we take with us also have these clips (since we leave the others at the dock).
I will tell you that we were clipping to the inside lifting lug at the stern but after looking at the other tie-ups the lightbulb went on and I'll be tieing to the outside part of the lug so as not to stress down on the rubrail. Hope this helps as a quick disconnect method. Good Luck.
