well, i think i am probably 6 weeks away from getting this ready to run. i have been pretty diligently searching around the area ads/craigslist for a motor that is remote and short shaft. damn this is hard to find ! so ... i am starting to think that i "might" close in the stern so i can mount a long shaft motor.

i am not a whiz with fiberglass, but it doesn't look hard - i would get a fill board cut to measure and bolt it in, then resin and mat over it until it is very impregnated then gel coat it to seal. i probably would get a backing plate to ensure a sturdy mount.

what do you think - should i continue to hold out for a decent short shaft or build up the transom.

i guess my other option is to get a long shaft then change it to a short shaft, but i am a "little uncomfortable" with doing all that ... thanks for your advice.

The easiest way would be an adapter to fit the transom and fill in the void. They aren't cheap but very nice looking and easy to mount. You could be on the water in no time instead of all the labor and materials.

Unless you really want to build it yourself, I personally would buy the Transdapter.

Looking for a short shaft 25-35 OMC for your 13 footer? I have one that I would sell. It is a 1987 Evinrude 25 remote control. It is a fresh water motor with no corrosion but the powerhead is toast due to a head gasket leak that was left unfixed by the previous owner and the powerhead is internally rusted. However. I have another good powerhead. If your somewhat handy you can combine the two into one good motor. It can also be made into a 35hp by interchanging the carb with one from a 35hp. These 35.1 cu in OMC motors are difficult to find in the short shaft remote control version, as you know.

I used a transom mount to put a 20" shaft on a 15" transom. I have emailed you a picture of same. I think it would be better to use a mount than to build up the transom. It would increase your performance and maintain the originality of your hull. Just my opinion. Let me know and I will get the specs and company on where you can order the mount.

I was in the same position, having much trouble finding a decent used short shaft remote motor, so I purchased the transdaptor....no sooner do I come accross a nice 2005 short shaft Merc on Craigslist. Another addition to my pile of costly spare parts.
