I recently inherited my grandfathers 13' Whaler and would like to restore it. I think the boat is in good structural shape but would like to have the hull refinished and repainted. The paint has quit a few spider cracks in it. Could someone please point me in the right direction on how to do the work myself or pass along a name and number of a person who does good boat repair in Wisconsin or Minnesota. Preferably Central WI or Twin Cities MN Area.

To get an idea of what is involved in how to do the work yourself, go to the left column and under Members Information select Members Latest Pages. Then go down to the bottom of the page and select all member project albums. Check out what others have done. Also, site search under any topic(spider cracks) for info on what has been discussed before. The best of luck with it.

Spider cracks and gelcoat checking are not the same thing. You probrably have gelcoat checking. Spider cracks are caused by blunt trauma and are actually in the glass. The gelcoat just maps those cracks. Gelcoat checking is caused by weather.

first the boat isn't painted, it's gelcoat assuming it's original. If you can shine up the gelcoat she will last a lot longer than any paint you could apply. To shine up the gelcoat use wet/dry sandpaper or buff magic. Try that before you paint a classic whaler

Ditto what Kamie said if at all possible. Your in MN? I would use it for the season and put it up for restore in the winter.

So you get an idea about what buff magic can do, here is a thread and some pictures of my 13 footer.

Thanks for the advice. I think you are right about the gel coat checking. Should the checking be sanded out first before you use Buff Magic?

I can't tell by your pics but inner gelcoat might be too far gone to buff.
