Cliff, this is a tragedy beyond comprehension. The effects from this disaster will be felt for decades. I have read that the CG and Feds are going to step in with the cleanup efforts. Once again, the American public will have to foot the bill.

BP has already spent $800 million towards this tragedy, and they're going to get nailed for a whole lot more.

Thanks to Joe for allowing this thread, unlike the "other site". A definite political agenda there

Take you opinions to THT's bilge thread on the subject, so we can keep this one alive.

The CG made a statement today saying bp has stopped the flow. Here is a live feed of the operation: http://www.bp.com/liveassets/bp_inter...tream.html

No, the flow of oil has not stopped as some reports have claimed. The "top kill" does seem to moving towards success, however. The rate of flow has diminished but it will be several days before we can tell if the well has been stopped.

In the mean time this has now (offically) become the worst oil spill in US history. Even by the very most conservative estimates we are at a spill of 17 million gallons. The Exxon Valdez spilled "only" 11 million gallons.

By other estimates, the spill could be five times that large.

Let's pray the new strategy works, but even if it does, the worst damage has yet to occur as the vast majority of oil already spilled is still far, far from shore.

It is a sad situation. I feel sorry for all the sealife and wildlife that are affected by the oil spill. I also feel sorry for all the fishermen, crabbers, shrimpers, and oystermen that will loose income for maybe years to come. Hotels and resturants in the area are already affected. It's just a shame.

Most of Louisiana's coast is river delta. Very few sand beaches that although not easy to clean it is possible. Heck the coast of Mississippi from Waveland to past Biloxi was mud beach and sand was brought in by man. But Louisiana is grass marsh, which the grass is what holds the mud together against the wave actions. The grass is also habitat for all manner of life, the redfish love to cruise the banks at a falling tide to feast on tiny crabs swept out, which is why like the redfish I watch for the falling tide, I am a member of the food chain.
What happens when you throw oil on your front lawn, this is what will happen to the marsh, and when the grass dies even without any storms the wave action will take the estuary's. Without the river flow and millons of years to make the deposit of sediment these fishing grounds are gone forever. Not to mention the first line of defence against storms for New Orleans and the other coastal towns.

With the "top kill" not working I sure hope their next plan works. They talked about cutting off the pipe at the riser and lowering another shutoff on top of that. Sad, very sad!

The latest "Fix" actually added about an estimated 20% more oil into the Gulf....such a shame.

What if we have a major hurricane come through and it disburses the oil throughout the area farmlands and wetlands more so than it already has? This will destroy all of the vegetation and leave much of the land barren and open for more erosion. Wow, scary stuff.

WASHINGTON – BP will set aside $20 billion to pay the victims of the massive oil spill in the Gulf, senior administration officials said Wednesday, a move made under pressure by the White House as the company copes with causing the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history.

If BP would just put a wedding ring on the leaking pipes, the well would stop putting out almost immediately....

Here is a video you might find intresting made by the La. SeaGrant org. post Katrina about the loss of the barrier islands. You might even sea a Whaler in one of the slides. WWW.laseagrant.org/lighthouse/transformations.htm
While your at it try visting the WWW.Laseagrant.org site and check out the left sidebar at the bottom for the link Video & Media and watch the drying shrimp video. I can remember as a kid seeing the outdoor shrimp racks that was abandoned. I had forgotten about them because today I can not tell you where one might be found.
