spectrum gel coat match?

I have a 1984 Montauk with a few interior and exterior dings I'd like to repair. Could anyone tell me what colors I need to ask for when I order from Spectrum, or if there is another source who that might be and what color they might recommend I purchase? I appreciate your help!

I ordered five gallons from them. I used their color fan and got a really good match. They are much, much, much, much cheaper than spectrum.

A 1984 Montauk uses Desert Tan both inside and out. A 1983 would use Outrage Grey on the outside and Desert Tan on the inside.
The Spectrum Gel Coat Patch Paste Kits cost $25 at most chandleries. They're only $22.46 at Fisheries Supply.

Can you buy five gallons of some other gel coat for less than that?
They sell in sizes smaller than five gallons. One quart can is $17 dollars. I don't know what shipping is and they don't charge HAZMAT fee for sizes less than 5 gallons. If my understanding of numbers is correct, I believe $17 is less than $22.46, but maybe I am wrong.

Yes, Lt. Grey is what Spectrum calls "Outrage Grey" and is what you would order for a 1982 Montauk.
1984 was the year that Whaler went to Desert Tan for both the inside and outside of the hull for all the small (16'-7" and smaller) models.

Tom - Have you had any actual experience with Spectrum's "Outrage Grey" for the exterior hull color on the 1974-1983 Montauks?
Does it actually match reasonably close?
The reason I ask is that I bought a quart of it for my same period 1975 Outrage 19 exterior, which also has the Desert Tan interior color, and it was nowhere near a match. I couldn't use it without major tinting.
I think Spectrum has the wrong color code on that particular color.

I had an '82 sport 17 and the hull was white while the interior was desert tan. I used the desert tan on my 1990 outrage 19 and was a perfect match.

I have a color fan I can mail you. I used F100 because it matched my console very well, but that doesn't mean it will match yours because yours may be from a different mix, fading ect.

Yes, I have actual personal experience with the Spectrum Lt. Gray (Outrage Grey). I used it on my 1980 Montauk and it was not as good a match as the Desert Tan was, but it worked. It can be tinted lighter or darker as needed.
Obviously all hulls are different and the exteriors of Whaler hulls typically see a lot more sunlight and therefor have much greater variation in the color of the gel coat.
I have noted very obvious color differences on the same piece of fiberglass (a console shell) from one side to another. There is no ONE correct color.

One quart can is $17 dollars.
Does $17 worth of gel coat include it being thickened into a paste (which is what is needed to fill the typical screw holes, nicks and scratches) as well as the surface sealing wax to make it cure hard?
If so, I'd say that $17 is a good deal though the $5 savings is not really what I would call "much, much cheaper" or even merely "much cheaper" let alone "much, much, much, much cheaper" ;-)

Fisheries Supply is out of stock of Desert Tan and has been for a while. At least the few times I've checked since last summer.

I got my price wrong, its $19 for a quart and one extra dollar for wax. I haven't worked with what I have ordered yet, so I don't know how thick it is. Per unit price, I think the quart would qualify as much cheaper, but if you only need a little, the savings might not amount to much. If you compare spectrum's price for five gallons, over $700, to expresscomposites.com's price, $260 shipped, I would say much, much, much, much cheaper. The price I was quoted by spectrum didn't include hazmat and shipping.
