Hi Folks, haven't been on in a while. My 1980 13' with a 1985 50 hp Merc is having trouble getting on plane with 1 passenger and some other weight. I rebuilt both carbs and replaced the plugs. The prop size is 17p and is admittedly, chewed up. I know there is a lot of guess work and trial and error, but does anyone have any "ball park" recommendations for prop sizes for that hull and motor set up. I would like ot use it to pull up a skier and top end speed isn't as important but don't want to rev it beyond limitation. Thanks, it's great to be back out on the water.
I have a different setup, but probably close enough. Mine is a 2001 13 with the 40 HP two stroke. On mine, the stock prop was a 10-3/8" diameter prop with a 14 pitch. I did change mine to a 13 pitch for the reason you mention. I recently put a Stiletto stainless steel prop in the same pitch on, but I haven't been able to do any real boating on lakes where I could get up and test it yet. It's just been bass fishing on no wake lakes so far (and it's still to cold to go fast!). In the 40's here today.
I think that your 2001 40 HP might have some more torque then my 85 50hp, but that sounds more like the right set up. We haven't had many good boating days here on Eastern Long Island, in fact, we've only been out once. But that's typical for out here until it warms up after Memorial Day. Many thanks.
