I just pulled this 17 foot Whaler out of the woods where it's sat for 10 years. I have no idea what model it is how to find out or anything. It measured 16'9" and 72" at the widest point. It has a 1984 Evinrude 115hp V4 mounted on the back and that's it except for four wooden rails on the floor. Also there is a tunnel running almost the entire length to the drain plug. Any help links or ideas on where to get started on this boat would be greatly appreciated and also any info on it would be great.

To determine which model you have, you can start by looking in the FAQ section here:

That boat was rated for a maximum of 100hp so the motor is good if you like to go fast but it may mean that you will be paying a higher insurance premium. If the motr has sat for that long you will need to see if it is seized by turning it over by hand. You will probably need a carb rebuild and replace the fuel lines sprk plugs etc..

I spent one of those all nighter tear downs the other night. It looks like the carbs were rebuilt but never had any fuel in them after wards. The reed valves are new and everything else looks fresh. The plugs were barely brown. I did have some minor rat damage to a few wires but fixed that pretty quick. The water pump is what i'm worried about...Got a bee nest in the intakes on the lower unit...I dont want to crank it until I get all that crap out of there.

Ya, be sure to replaced the impellor/water pump......don't even risk hooking a hose to it and cranking it before replaceing that item. Chances are it is totally dry rotted and not worth a hoot.

Replacing the water pump impeller is a simple job. But before you get too involved with that motor I would squirt some oil in the cylinders, turn it over a few times by hand with the plugs out to spread the oil, than hook a battery to it and take a compression test. Its really cool to find a Whaler in the woods, but how will you get it registered and titled?

Ill figure out a way to get it tagged we dont worry that much about those sort of things around here...lol...anyway yep a buddy of mine that works on 4wheeler motors and such...he said it looks completely rebuilt. From the newness of the gaskets to how clean the carbs were the new reed valves and also looks like it was painted. It should be fine I just need to change out or rebuild the water pump. The boat belonged to my ex-brother in law and just sat it next to my barn for over 10 years. They divorced and now he lives in texas with a brand new robalo. It falls under an abandonment issue. If you leave something on someone ones property without paying storage or by having a written agreement it belongs to the land owner after so many years.

If you can't get the registration from him you can go thru the court and apply for abandoned property and get clear title. It doesn't take that long and is pretty inexpensive.

Better post a pic of the boat on here, so we can identify it. Might not be worth a shootout if the boat is only a Whaler copy.

I think you are going to be pleasantly surprised after you put a little elbow grease into this project.

Given the length of time it sat with what looks like standing water in it (?), might not be a bad idea to take and have it weighed just to make sure. You'd hate to do all the restoration work only to find on launch day that it's waterlogged.

Ahhh. Thats a good idea...How would I do that? at a marina, truck scale,or what? What do you think the boat motor and trailer should weigh?

If you're going to take it off the trailer and flip it to resurface the bottom, it may be easiest, if you can get (borrow) 4 scales, put one in each corner and add them up to get your total weight.
