I'm looking to invest in a 1972 ribbed side whaler outrage in need a lot of work. Basically i'd be doing a complete restoration on it and would love to get it looking mint. But my main concern is how difficult parts and accessories will be to find. Am I getting in over my head? Does anyone have any advice or ideas for me? Thanks

If you are inclined to take a refit hobby project like this one instead of actually be doing some boating;
It will take many hours of your time to complete..So better have fun doing it.
It is not going to be cheap
It is not going to be easy to locate all the parts
It may take forever to complete the project..
And you may never totally recoup of your actual costs
BUT, you may have a ton of fun working your way through it,
You will make some good friends while chatting about your ongoing works
And you may learn to have a passion for the "Whaler refit project"
Or learn to never do this again.
Check out about all that will be involved and see if this will be fun for you.
Dont lie
Dont Cheat
And dont give up.. |

You have definitely found a good resource if you do take this on.

Thanks for the words of wisdom. It seems as though most likely I will be taking on this project. But does anyone know where I can obtain parts?

There is really no one source for obsolete parts.
It also depends on which part.
Some vendors are reproducing some parts but again, it depends on the part.
Many of us look for other people that are parting out a damaged boat.
Or, look on eBay, Craigslist, etc... This can and mostly does take time.
Do you have a list of parts you are missing?

I'm restoring a 1971 (ribside) Outrage 21. Most of the parts you will have to fabricate yourself or keep looking for them on them online.
I did find a correct helm steering wheel on Ebay and a few bases for the bow rail, but the console and base, hatch cover, and ceiling boards, I'm building myself.
It is a lot of fun and a lot of work, but very rewarding to save a piece of history. The added benefit is you get to meet some nice people along the way.

John...
So much to consider;
And not that much time to get all the facts.
I would advise for you to consider all of the Spring season Whaler offerings.
I personally love the Dumptruck 21 and have had Friends that still sail them;
I still am deep within an affair with my Classic 19 75 and still think that they don't make them as they used to be..
BUT;
Straight up..
Here is one that I would most surely consider;
If I was in your position to adopt an Outrage..
It is a 1991 Outrage 18, most appealingly priced at 12.5Ks
All done and ready to be taken out.
Unless that you have a huge desire to invest into time, efforts and money..
I would personally check this one out..

I can actually tell you that it is the same boat that I have had a photo printout on the door of my fridge for some years now..But just saw this very sweet Outrage being offered lately.

A truly inspiring beauty..
Keep your options open.

A word of advice from someone who has restored and rebuilt a number of boats. DO NOT keep tract of the money you are spending on this project. Just keep a vague total in your head. This way you will not get discouraged, with what you are spending, By just keeping a total in your head, your mind has a way of compensating, and you forget about the little things that add up. Don`t set a time frame either, if you need to go fishing or boating get another boat for the interim. Chances are you will not make money on your project, but if you don`t keep tract of the expenses, when the time comes to sell, you will think you did and be happy. I think I actually made 5k on a 25` Bertram I restored back in the `80`s. but I can`t say for sure. LOL BTW I`d rather work on boats than use them.
