I'm restoring a 1970 17-foot Boston Whaler. I recently finished sanding off all of the bottom paint and noticed a sap-like substance seeping out of the haul. It wasn't much, just a small bubble or two, but I was wondering why it might be happening. I'm going to gel coat the boat in about two weeks, so wanted to know if I needed to remedy this or if it's nothing to worry about. Thanks!

You need to grind it back and let it dry before filling.

I have the same problem on a 87 Model 18 Guardian, after sanding to prepare for painting, small cracks with a tar like sticky, oozing out of the cracks, there are quite a few, my fiberglass & paint guy says he has never seen this before, we do not know where to go from here?

That may be uncured resin from when the boat was made. It is not a huge problem.

Maybe Tom or one of the veterans can post the remedy.

I have seen this on my 82 Montauk as well. Dark brown and sticky like tree sap. Very strange.

We called it Coca-cols. Its water in the hull, reacting with the foam and resin.

water intrusion as mentioned above. I would open the pin hole that it is coming from and fill it before applying gel or paint.
