I have a 1962 13 ft whaler. I need to paint the bottom but I'm not sure what paint they have on the bottom now. It is not "bottom painted" but the hull is repainted. So, I was told that if you don't know what kind of paint is on there, when you bottom paint with a ablative paint, there could be a bad interaction between the paints causing bubbling. A knowledgeable local boat painter told me that he couldn't figure out what the paint was, he said it's not Awlgrip or about 5 other common paints. What is "spray can" paint? He suggested to just do a test area with the bottom paint that I have (Petit's Hydrocoat), find the waterline, and bottom paint it with what I have and see what happens. (If the test area is successful) If it fails this year, then I'll strp it and redo it next year. Do you think this is a reasonable course of action?
