First I'd like to thank everyone for all the useful input on this forum. I'm restoring my Grandfather's 1986 Montauk and my first step is to repower. I just received an offer for a 2000 90hp Evinrude Ficht for $3,150 rigged. The motor has 92 hours and in great shape, with over 75% of its time spent below 2,000 rpms.

I wanted to see what all the enthusiasts and experts thought about this offer. Thoughts?

Also, does anyone have any pictures of their Montauk rigged with a Ficht? I'd love to get a preview and see how she would look.

Thanks for all your help!

Be careful with the ficht. That motor is partly to blame for evinrude going into bankruptcy. They had seroius problems with the injectors coming apart and damaging the powerheads. I'd recommend doing a bit of research to make sure the one your looking at isn't in the range of the bad years/models. I'm unsure without looking which years were most prone to failure but you may want to look into it.

I would avoid that motor, I've never heard anything "good" about the "ficht". I have heard new curse words invented after mentioning the word "ficht" !

I have read there are specific model years to avoid. I think that the bad years were the 90's till 2000 or 2001. After that changes were made and many owners reported great performance/reliability.

Www.I-boats.com has an Evinrude forum and they can give you the specific years and models to avoid. If this is too nerve wracking, pass on this candidate.
Another boat will come up.

Thanks for the responses. In doing some research, it appears that the trouble motors were higher HP models built on the V6 block between 99 and 01. I've read about many satisfied owners that love their Fichts, especially a few with 90's on the back of their Montauks.

I think that the motor would've shown signs of trouble by this point. Decision still up in the air but leaning heavily towards pulling the trigger. Thanks

There were two differant ficht engine; the first being just the ficht and then there was the ficht "RAM", of which was well a bad idea.

That's the general concensus with these engines. Are the 92 engine hours original as that's not a whole lot for a 10 year old engine.

I use about 40-50 hrs of "RUN" time per year/season here in the North East.

Same here, so I'm wondering if that rule of thumb would apply to this engine if those are the original hours.

Those are the original engine hours. Here's the actual breakdown of the RPMs as well from the computer diagnostics:

37% 0-1000
44% 1000-2000
6% 2000-3000
9% 3000-4000
4% 4000-5000
0% 5000-6000

It is a regular Ficht, not the RAM.

Thanks for your input.
