Help! I"m cleaning the bottom of my 13' 1985 Whaler down to the fiberglass. There are deep scratches, pockmarks etc. caused by wear and tear on an old boat. Is there a fairing compound that will also seal the bottom so water can't get into the foam? I don't just want to paint over these areas and end up with a water logged hull.
If you have taken it down to the fiberglass, yes you'll notice thousand of little spots that look like holes. It will take several attempts to get them all filled. As far a fairing compound, I used a marine grade polyester putty. The creamer the better as it fills the holes much easier.
When you think your done, run water over it and look for specs that appear as an air bubble or speck of trash (tiny speck). If you see those go over it again. I did this many times to only find a few still in the final coat of paint.
If that happens all is not lost. As I only have a couple, I used a tooth pick and filled with a dot of paint and it was gone.
