I am trying to take off the old rubrail on my 68 13 Sport. It is glued on and wants to take chunks of gelcoat with it. There is a pic in my personal page if you want to take a look at what is happening. What is the easiest way to take the old rail off without doing too much damage?
unfortunately with the age of the glue, I'm not sure anything will soften it up. I had the same problem when I removed mine. I used a 1" chisel gently prying it from the boat but the area behind the rail was thin and some what rotted (pretty rough shape) so it required rebuilding the rail anyway.

Pull the railing off at 180 degree angle, slowly. In other words do not pull the rail off perpendicular to the boat, pull it off parallel to the side. This lessons the tension to pull off the gel coat. Mine is in the same shape as yours and this helped save most of the gelcoat.
