Is this a short shaft motor or a long saft? Has the transom on your boat been raised?

Even if the transom has been raised the outboard is 237#. The boat will be very stern heavy. You should keep the outboard weight under 200# which for a Yamaha is the 25HP. If the transom has not been raised, you will need to as all the Yamaha's are 20 inch shaft.

Look through the personal pages. Someone has an old 13 that has a 4 stroke 50 hp Yamaha and it is entirely nose up out of the water even when sitting still. Even the 40 hp 4 stroke is too large and heavy. You should try to keep the engine weight below 200 lbs. I'm not sure what is available in the Bahamas but you can still purchase a 40 hp Yamaha 2 stroke in Australia. It's not distributed in the continental U.S. You will still have to raise the transom.

With a motor that heavy, a 15 inch transom is to low and you will have water coming in all the time. Since your motor is probably a 15 inch, check out this thread on the Kent fab transom device that raises your transom from a 15 to a 20 inch transom.

My tohatsu dealer has a 40 short shaft fuel injected 2 stroke with power trim that weighs 205 lbs. It comes with controls, tach, prop and trim gauge for $4800. My 16' has the 50 hp which is basicly the same engine and I love it. I don't know if you can buy tohatsu or nissan outboards in the bahamas or not but it's getting harder to find short shafts. Good luck. Tom from mass.

My '08 25hp 4 stroke Merc/Tohatsu is a short shaft, weighs 157lbs. I think its still bring made. Merc 25s and 30s are re badged Tohatsus, and great motors, but not fast enough for some folks though.

If you want to go really fast find a 2 or 3 year old Tohatsu short shaft 50 hp two stroke. Not available anymore in the USA, but still may be available in Canada.

The problem with putting a 50 on your boat is that the boat is not rated for the engine. I would thnk that you would void any warranty overpowering the boat. I know my marine mechanic does not work on any boat where the owner has overpowerd it. He says it is a liability issue.

I've got a Honda BF40 on my 13 super and have moved everything forward (low profile tank under the front bench, battery under the rear bench, etc) and she still rides a tad stern heavy when I'm alone but....performance is great.

I think the warranty on the boat has expired, it's a 1964 model.

Hi my old 72 13 had a 1993 40hp Johnson with a tiller handle. I repowered it that way. Seems to me this was a heavy motor but can remember the weight. But it was one of those detuned 50 hp and it worked well. Joe

It is only a liability issue for your mechanic if he rigged the boat. My mechanic won't rig a higher HP engine than the rating, but he sure works on mine with no issues.

If they were smart they would rig it for cash. Then no paper trail. I`m sure they are not as busy as they used to be.

I'll rig any motor on any boat, whether it be a 50 on a 13, or triple 9.9s on a 345 Conquest.

As long as the install is correct (my part), any unforseen consequences are on THE OWNERS part...

Yeah, that's right, I said triple 9.9s...opposite ends of the spectrum, you know...

My 1970 13' Whaler powered by a 1986 50 h.p. Yamaha 2 stroke is presently serviced by my local Yamaha dealer, no questions asked. The motor still runs fine. Try finding a 2 stroke in that h.p. range for the 13'. You will need a short shaft motor for the older 13' Whalers.
