Hi all, I'm a new Whaler owner as of last Thursday when I finally found what I was looking for. The boat is a 2001 Montauk 17 and she looks to be in great shape. The previous owner stored it covered and under a shelter. It's equipped with what appears to be all original equipment. The hull is in beautiful shape and the deck, cushions and bimini top are in great shape too. The motor is a Mercury 2 Stroke salt water edition, looks good inside and out but I don't really know much about these so I'm a little nervous.
I had the seller de-winterize it (he had removed the plugs and put 2 stroke oil in the cylinders, turned over the motor, then reinstalled the plugs when he put it up last season - - this along with fuel stabilizer that was added is what he called winterizing - being a Floridian my Dad never did this so it's new to me). After pulling the plugs and turning it over a few times, then reinstalling plugs the motor cranked up and burned out the remaining oil then started to run clean and smoke free. To me this was enough to satisfy my concerns but are there any things I can check myself prior to putting her in the water for the first time?
It would probably be a good idea to lube the steering and I would also get someone to change the foot oil. If you can, find out if the water pump has ever been replaced. If not, keep an eye on the pee stream your first few times out to make sure you have a good flow of water.
