I have the pleasure of getting a 1987 Boston Whaler Guardian. It needs new power.

The Guardian 18 is a beefed up version of the classic Outrage 18 (1750 lbs. vs. 1250 lbs.)

Any thoughts on an engine for the boat which is rated for 150 hp? Any thoughts on E-Tec or Yamaha (four stroke)?

Thanks in advance.

My choice would be the E-tec own one, love it and it's as clean and quite.

You might also look at this Guide if you haven't already.

Note: Some engines listed are short shaft so you would need to add a few pounds on the total weight.

The E-Tec is the lightest in the 150 HP class and the weight listed is for a 25 inch shaft model unlike some of the others.

I would prefer that all manufacturers at least give us the weights of the various shaft length motors so we don't have to guess. I know it may not be that much, 5 pounds or so, but it isn't that hard to add it to their website information.

E-tec engine's are nice, but how far is a dealer from you? Where is the closest marina to you? What engines do they sell? How is your relationship with them? All the new engines are good, no sense in buying a certain engine when the closest dealer is 100 miles away. I would go with the closest dealers to you and choose an engine from them.

There is not a single 150 HP outboard made today that would be a bad choice for this model.

I'd consider who your nearest dealer is and factor that into your decision.
