Can any one tell me where the wires to the running light are? Do they run behind the rub rail? How do you replace them? New to the site, rewiring my Outrage

The wires to the side lights run between the rub rail receiver track and the rub rail insert, thence to the inside of the hull amidships and down behind the side panels there that conceal the fuel hoses and under the floor under the small floor panels and then up into the console.

You need to peel the rub rail insert out of the track to expose the wire. It is a very easy job to do.

When reinstalling the insert, be sure to use soapy water and if you can do it during hot weather, the job will be that much easier.

For wire, Whaler used lousy 18 gauge lamp cord. I recommend a good Marine Grade wire that is tinned. Unfortunately it must have a small diameter to fit in the insert.

The best wire I have found for the job is (ironically) ANCOR's 16 gauge speaker wire, which is fully tinned and not that expensive.

Tom, Thank you for your reply. I was thinking this was the case, but didn't want to take the rail off and look silly with no wires underneith.

On my 18 all the wires run under the rubrail on the starboard side. They go out into the rigging tunnel, out under the starboard pannel and out thru the side of the boat under the rub rail. The wires for the port light run around the bow.
None of the wires for the lights run from the console, across the fuel tank and out the port side.

I read the posts from January but not sure which will apply to my 1985 Outrage. I was stripping the end of the wire today to try to improve contact, as the port side light was not working, when four to five inches of the portside light wire broke off. Is it coming up the port side under the rubrail or from around the bow from the starboard side?

Appreciate any advice from someone who has run into this problem.

It comes from the STBD side, under the black rub rail insert. If you can I would replace all of runing liight wires if it's falling apart like that, and use tinned wire (marine). Tom says that 16 ga. speaker wire from ANCOR works fine.

Thanks, I tried to cut out some of the bad ends and add new wire, still no good. I will replace the entire length from the portside light back to the console connection.

When I pulled the portside rubrail out and put it back I was about two inches short of where I started. I assume this will happen on the starboard side as well.

2 wires go from the console to the Starboard light.

Then 2 other wires run from the starboard light to the port light to complete the same connection.

I have a 1975 montauk w/ the same wire deterioration problem for the running lights. Do the wires on my boat also run along under the rubrail? If so any tips on how to remove it and reinstall it after?

Yes I believe they do run under the black insert. Same side as the stern light all the way fwd. Take the screw out that holds the insert on the stern and work your way fwd. Use a piece of duck tape to hold the insert from comming all the way off. Replace the wires and put it back, you might want help holding the insert as you are feeding it back into the reciever, don't be alarmed if it apears to have "grown" in length at the end just let it relax or shrink, don't cut it!! Then put the screw in.

Here's a photo from one of the Outrage Part Manuals which is available for download in our downloads section.

This photo shows you exactly how one pair of wires goes to the starboard light and then another pair of wires comes out and goes around the bow to the port light.
