Hey guys, I picked up a new to me 13' Sport earlier this week and I am trying to determine the best method for removing old blue bottom paint. The paint appears to be pretty chalky and will come off on your fingers very easily. I am not sure if sanding or something like Soy Strip would be best. Also, the gel coat on the sides and inside of the boat is clean and in good condition for its age. However, it does appear to be a little dull. Any recommendations on how to bring it back? I'll post a project page shortly - Garret

I just did the same job. Aqua strip or ready strip start w/ a gallon. What ever brand you choose make sure it is gelcoat safe. The hull wet sand w/ 600 or 800 or buff w/ 3m Restorer and Wax.

I had all the bottom paint soda blasted off. Came out ok, still needs to be wet sanded.

For the non-painted gelcoat:
With a polisher and damp wool bonnet:
Meguires 44, then;
3M Finess-IT; then;
Marine Wax

Wax the bottom ?
Promotes marine growth and slows the boat down.

Citristrip (spray over brush on), 400 grit, then 600 grit, then 800 grit, then 1200 grit followed by 3M compound. Shies like the original. Be sure to wear a good mask protecting the lungs.
