I have a 1980 sport 15. I just purchased. The wood(mohogahy) is all original. and needs to be replaced.I am thinking about going back with a center console,20''deep 25''wide and 32''tall aprox(it could be smaller). Any thoughts on using Black Walnut? Would this be too heavy.
thanks for any comments or suggestions
cheers
Ralph

I'm not sure about using walnut. Teak and mahogany have a better moisture resistance.

Make sure that type of wood does not "Check" or "Warp", my friend insisted on "OAK" for his Bow cover on his 13', it warped into a Hockey stick in a short time.

walnut is a native wood, very stable and the heartwood is quite rot resistant. I have plenty that has been ageing for about 15 years. I love the looks of mohogany but I hope the BW willbe a decent substitute.
thanks for the input

Ralph,
I think it would be BEAUTIFUL in black walnut. Please do it and post some photos.
Take a look at my center console that I did last winter for my SS15 (in the personal pages dated March, 2009) for some design ideas. If you want any info or exact measurments, just let me know. I'm very happy I converted the boat to a center console. It is much more comfortable and usable.

Great pictures. This configuration looks so much more comfortable. I have made my first mock-up of the console, after seeing yours I will be making some changes.
Tomorrow will be my maiden voyage in my 1980 whaler with its original side console. After I get back I will start the change over to the center console using the black walnut from a tree taken down at a house where I grew up.
thanks for the inspiration.
Ralph
