I have managed to get all the water out of my deck foam and the hull is light enought that my son and I easily pick the the hull up and flip over now. I am getting ready to cut out the wood in the deck for the side console. Should I also cut the wood out for the transom? I have been sanding down the entire hull and have found no sign that the transom has ever had holes drilled for motor mounting, just the holes for the eye bolts. Thoughts??

Leave it alone. If the transom is rigid, it is fine. If it's flapping in the breeze, then do something with it.

If the transom is solid, why tear it apart? Most of the 25-40HP are clamp on so no holes would have been drilled to mount the outboard.

Word to the wise. If you're goig to put a 30 or 40 hp motor on your boat, be sure to bolt it on with through bolts Through the transom in addition to clamping it on. If you clamp it on only, be prepared to fish it off the bottom when it falls off.

Cliff?
the 30HP on my 13 was only clamped on? To the best of my knowledge, it never fell off?
Care to share your reasons?

I would like to know also. When I was a kid my friend had a 13' BW with a 40Hp and we would go out in the Chesapeake Bay to jump ship waves. We never lost an engine or had any problems. Probably not the smartest thing to do but hey...we were young and dumb....lol

You'd have to have the clamps fastened in position in order for them not to back off. While underway especially in choppy seas. With the though bolts used, the chances of the engine coming off because of the clamps loosening up are nil.

Most clamps have holes so you can tie them together and they won't unscrew by themselves.

kamie, to back up cliffs' claim, during the first Manhattan whaler run, I was heading up the hudson in some very rough waves. I just happened to look back in time to see my 9.9 Yamaha kicker almost go into the drink. I quickly throttled back and the engine was one wave away from going in. I had clamped the engine down as tight as possible (used to bench 315 lbs), so I'm sure I put enough torque to the clamps.

Some more modern clamp on OBs have holes available on the transom brackets to also install thru bolts and recommended the manufacture. If you don't want to add the holes and bolts at least add a cable or chain as most manuals say to prevent loss when the screw clamps loosen and your motor wants to deep six.

Well, I learned my lesson. Not only will I TIGHTLY clamp my engine down, I will use the bolt hole on the motor as well.

I ran a 13 Sport for most of 15 years w/ a '71, Evinrude 33, w/ handle-clamps. Nada problems, EVER... but of course there was cable steering so the engine wasn't going anywhere if it went over anyway ! S/N 2A2451
Rule #1: Check engine clamps for tightness regularly !

Years ago when most engines were small it was standard procedure to have a safety chain from the boat to the engine just for those times when the clamps either looseded or the wood compressed and you go unit went!
