recently purchased 79 montauk love the boat .i waswanting to add a few cleats to the gunwales i found a bargain on some ss pop up cleats which would require me to cut into gunwale i know that many high end builders use them.is there any cons to using these instead of the reg cleats?
Pop up cleats are not as strong as the regular type. Double hull whalers were not designed to accept them. I have 4 of the 8" type of the regular kind. The mountings are in the middle (unlike the type with 4) these have 2 holes in the middle. I drilled a hole thru the gunwale and came out under the overhang. I used a metal backing plate taking up the length of both fasteners and then thru bolted them. I have 2 forward and 2 aft like this. Older Montauks (before 2002) have the gunwale overhang to do this. They are strong enough to tow another boat on a alongside tow.
