Hello everyone. Im new to the site and I bought a 16' 1967 two weeks ago of which im not sure of the model because the original console is gone. The boat is in suprisingly solid shape other than really cracked up gel coat. My question is that there seems to be a series of screws under the paint around the entire seam that seperates the non slip surface of the deck and the surround and im beginning to believe that it is not original and that somebody must have pulled it up to repair or something. Am I right or is this on everone elses boat? I came across this boat for a relly good deal and Ive always wanted a whaler. Anyhow I seemed to have been hit with the bug because Ive never been part of a forum. I thank anyone in advance for info.

It might be easier to understand if you have some pictures to post.

Those are impressions in the gel coat. I belive they are the screws that were used to put in that strip that caused what you call a seam. the screw is actually facing toward you into the mold you just see the copy of the head which makes it look like it is facing down.

Allright. I can't manage to get a photo here. But its on the floor. There is a section that covers the whole floor with a patterned texture and stops about 2 inches before the sides of the boat. Between there is a very shallow trench surrounding the textured portion and within that trench there are screws spaced about 2 inches apart but not necessarily spaced perfect. They travel around the entire floor of the boat. I dont think they are just impressions but I would have to maybe take a wire wheel to the seam or trench to be certain.

I'm in Covington. Maybe I could take a look and help you out or you can look at my '81 Montauk and see what the floor should look like and decide if it isn't original. I just took a break from working on my whaler and decided to check in on the site. Funny, I thought I was the only one in the area not watching the Saints game! Welcome to the site.

Scratch that. The date on my watch is wrong. I see you posted yesterday. Maybe I am the only one not watching the Saints game!

No It should be today. Im watching the Saints game at the same time. Dvr is great. And Im wondering if my floor is original at all at this point. I also might like to see in person what it should look like.

The series of little indentations was around the "trench" on a 74 Cohassett I worked on. I've also seen them in a 69 Menemsha. Its from the manufacturing process.

I might be in New Orleans tomorrow or Tuesday. I can stop by and take a look if you would like.

Well. It wont be necessary. I took a wire brush and took them down. They are not screws but screw impressions as Bake had mentioned. But what would have been there to be screwed upwards? Was there some sort of wood trim? Anyway Im just releaved that I dont have to seal a hundred or so screw holes.

The mold was the exact opposite of the inside of your boat. The trench where you found the impressions was actually a raised part of the mold. The screws, I suppose was how they attached the raised portion of the mold.
Looks just like screws in your boat though didn't it.

I would have sworn. Shows you how good the gelcoat and the paint on top of the gelcoats condition is. But everything seems solid as a rock. If I could get myself to stop using the boat I will sand it all down. Thanks for the replys.
