Hey all!
New to the site and have a question about my Whaler. I've got a 1971 13 footer with a 28 hp johnson tiller. Need to find out the best trim setting for my boat.
On most boats I've had, the transom has pretty much been at 90 degrees to the hull. On the Whaler the engine hangs at a different angle ( 60 degrees ? ) My qustion is, should the trim pin be set so the engine hangs strait up and down relative to the hull, or is some other angle better. I was out today and the boat seemed to rock from nose to tail while up on plane. Thanks for the advise and I'm looking forward to your response!

If your boat is porpoising at planing speeds, chances are that the engine is trimmed too far out. Try bringing it in one hole and try it again. It should be pretty much perpendicular to the water while running.

You really don't have very many choices. There are only 4 or 5 pin hole positions.
You can never get it perfect with that system. That's why they invented the trim motor with infinite trim positions by very small increments.
Just set it up the best you can that suits your needs.
My prior 13' with an Evinrude 35 on it did not have the power trim on it either so it was just like yours.
When I bought my prior Montauk with a 70 Evinrude on it, it also did not have power trim. The first thing I did was spend $600 on a brand new power trim and tilt system for that motor. Enjoyed it for 15 years before selling the Montauk.
On my 28spl I have five pin options. The second hole out is the bow trimmed slightly down (motor tilted in a tiny bit). The third hole out is the bow trimmed slightly up (motor tilted out a little more than the second hole is trimmed in).
If I'm running with just my daughter and I on the back bench seat and two tanks of gas I run the second hole to prevent porposing. Otherwise I run the third hole out. Sounds like you're running the 4th or 5th hole out?

I was in the 4th hole out, now the 3rd. Seems better. When I take someone fishing I'll repin out to the 4th.
