I'm brand new to Whalers, recently bought a 1976 13' - for the most part just in need of a cosmetic makeover, but there's a bit of damage along the keel line I'm getting ready to fix - bought all the fiber and gelcoat repair supplies. To make the repairs easier I'd like to flip the baby upside down (minus the motor and fuel tank!) so am ready to make a stand to mount her on, but I'm wondering where the safe points are to hold her from the top - perhaps the planks of the seats?
Don't use the wood to lift the boat, it could cause damage and might be dangerous. Use the two through bolted rings on the transom, and the one just fore of the bow locker. That is what they are there for and should hold the weight with no problem.

Using the bolt fore of the bow locker suggests hanging it right-side-up... I'm wondering whether there's a safe way to put it on a stand keel-up so I can work on it without having to climb underneath?
I thought you were asking how to hold it while flipping it...sorry. When mine was upside down, I had it right on the gunnels on some rigid foam board that was on the garage floor. I obviously had not mounted the rails yet. If I didn't do the work in the winter, I probably would have just had it on the grass in the yard.

No rails on at the moment - sounds like the gunnel supports the weight fine? I'll be doing some repairs along the gunnel and replacing the rub rail once I finish the bottom, so some minor chips there won't bother me, I just don't wanna crush anything!
Take the time to look at some members' personal pages and note how they have the boat supported. Obviously the hull is supported at the highest points of the gunwhale. Two supports about two feet from the transom, two about four feet from the bow. The gunwhales support it just fine. There are lots of helpful threads here on how to get it off the trailer and flipped.
