I am contemplating installing a permanent aluminum gas tank (RBS Aluminum) under the console of my nauset. I will have to create a filler connection into the console.

I have the measurements figured out and a custom (i.e. more money) tank is the only one I can see work IF a permanent installation is the right goal. Any alternative options that you have experienced? The current portable tank fits under the console, but there is nothing I have that keep it in place easily. I would appreciate any observations from the voices of experience.

While aluminum is a great material for fuel tanks, have you considered a Moeller tank? The come in a range of sizes and are a bit less expensive if that is an issue.

Since you don't provide dimensions, here are a few that may work:

12 gallons
Product # 031112
Product Dimension: 23.00"Lx14.00"Wx14.50"H

12 gallon - Low Profile
Product # 031212
Product Dimension: 24.00"Lx18.00"Wx11.50"H

15 gallon
Product # 031515
Product Dimension: 21.00"Lx16.00"W.12.00"H

I have looked at Moeller already. The measurements I have to work with are 23L X 12W X 13D. I must also take into account the fittings on top of the tank and as a result will probably lose at least an inch of depth. I could not find a 23X12X12 tank anywhere.

I could possibly go a bit wider, but I am starting to encroach on the steering cable/wiring access tube.

I could go higher, but that will require significant rework to the console and I am already at my limits with a relatively simple refinish effort.

I am less concerned about tank capacity versus convenience and simplicity (after the installation). Since I am considering a permanent tank, it affords me the opportunity to install a dash mounted fuel gauge too.

You could put a fuel tank "Tie down" kit on it (Marine store). I like portable tanks but, I only need a 6 gallon porta-tank, so it's easy for me.

Phil - I checked out Moeller via your link. The 15 gallon tank may work, but is a little wide. That's why I discounted it before. I have asked them (Moeller) if I can use any sort of a sending unit into a gauge. Probably cannot, but I thought I would see before I make any decisions.
