I'm planning on mounting a 12 gallon fuel tank under the front seat of my 13 Whaler. I haven't done the measurement yet but figure I'll probably need to make a 10-12 ft. fuel hose. I'm just wondering if the fuel pump on my '61 Johnson 40 will have any trouble pulling the fuel this far. Anybody have any experience with this?

Not sure about your engine, but I have the same setup with a 12 gallon tank under the front thwart seat and my 1994 Evinrude 48 has no problems pulling the fuel.

Thanks for the input Murphy. My pump is strong, newly rebuilt so I really think it will be fine. I'm not lifting the fuel any higher which is where a fluid pump has limitations, just moving it a bit further. I just want to carry more fuel and get some weight moved forward.

Getting the tank out of the back made mine ride a little better and also freed up some storage space in the back for the waterskis and kneeboard, and maybe a cooler or couple of chairs.

Post some pictures of your install so I can see how you attached the tank to the floor. I want to place a 12 gal tank under my front seat as well on my 13 ft Sport

The job is on hold at the moment, but I have plans to build an aluminum tank that will fit under the seat and attach to the bottom of it so that it is up off the floor. That way water flow under the seat for cleaning or just a wave over the front wouldn't be a problem. I contacted a welder and expect it to be in the $200 range. I will taper it so that it is narrower at the bottom than the top to keep from busting my shins on it. I don't think it will hold more that about 8 gallons, which is more than enough for a day on the water.

How will you arrange to fill the tank. I don`t think having to cut a hole in the seat is a satisfactory or professional way to do this. I hope you have figured out a better way.

Murphy,
who is the manufacturer of the 12 gal tank you used? Does your front seat hinge back in order to fill the tank?

thanks,
Mike

My Tempo tank has notches on either end. I cut mahogany blocks to fit, screwed them to the floor. Front seat holds it down. My 25 Johnson has no problem drawing fuel from it.

I bought the 12 gal. Moeller tank from IBoats. I haven't done the install yet and will probably make it part of a winter project. I will probably strap it to the floor. I think it's too much weight to be hanging from the seat. It will stick out about 3 inches in front of the seat. My plan is to install it with the filler neck closest to the rear. I'll cut a hole in the seat over the filler and get a flat stainless or chrome fuel filler door that pops open and mount that over the hole in the seat. Should look good, pop it open to access the filler cap. I'll also modify the vent somehow so I can attach a small hose running outside the boat when it is covered. I find that if I leave a vented tank in the boat with the cover on it leaves a slimy film inside the boat from gas fumes. For now I just remove my 6 gal can when I put the boat up but that won't be possible with the large tank.

I made clips that attach to the underside of the fwd. bench.
I have seen these clips available, but I made my own.

Mike,

It is a Temp 12 gallon tank. I simply slide the tank out from under the seat to fill it and then slide it back when I am done. Mine is not fastened to the hull or seat and I have no problems with it moving out of place.

Mike,

My 1984 13 is such that the floor in the middle flows flat from the front of the boat to the back, but the sides in the front have a gentle slope to towards the back. It is this slope that my tank rests on and there is plenty of clearance in the middle where the flat part of the floor goes under the tank for water to flow through. And yes...I have had several waves come over the bow to test that theory.
