I picked up a Teleflex SL-3 side mount control for my 13'. Does anyone have experience mounting this model? I'm thinking it should mount through the back of the side rail with horizontal component and wires running in the splashwell. Problem is, the splashwell is not wide enough and I'm concerned about the mechanical components being exposed. How should this be mounted and how can I protect the guts of it? I've gotten a lot of valuable advise from the experts on this site and hope I can get a little more. Thanks!

I know, its probably the wrong control to use in a 13' Whaler. But there's gotta be a way....

You may already have it but here's a link to owner's manual.

Those side mounts are made to have the guts mounted behind a side panel or console. You might want to build a housing for it and then mount to the side rail like Tom did.

Tom and #9 - Thanks. The issue is there is no casing or housing for the mechanical components and wires. Its all open. I've posted a couple pictures on my personal page "Good Ole Boat". The existing control box gets fiberglass in your palm and forearm. The replacement's horizontal piece is longer than the existing and is not enclosed at all. The instructions really don't help when trying to determine how to mount it. Do I have to custom build a box for it and mount to the side rail?

Do you have the other parts that go with the control for mounting shown on page 9 of the manual?
A custom built box is what I was thinking when saying housing. Plywood or starboard should work.

I do have the plastic faceplate. Looks like the only option is to custom build a box for mounting it in. Has anyone done this? Could sure use some ideas other than a big ugly wood box mounted to the side rail. Thanks everyone for checking in! I appreciate it. I'll get real pics up when the project is underway.

My only thoughts are to build it as small and beautiful as possible.
