I have a 1963 17' hull and am interested in building a little cabin on the bow. I have seen a couple of pictures on here but want to do it a little differnt and would like a little input from some people. I am in no way a very knowlegable about building boats and dont want to build something that it is top heavy or bow heavy. I would like to build something that extends from the bow almost all the way forward to about just about where the steering wheel is. Ideally it would about 4 or 5 feet tall off the deck. I would remove the center console and place the steering wheel and guages on top of the cabin. That way you would have to stand to drive. Kind of like the "Tricked out 17"(in the most popular photos) but move it foreward more. and not completely enclosed. no sliding door in the back. I would just like to make to little bunks in the front that i could sleep in and spot to keep my stuff dry while i am runnig. i know i am not going to be able to stand up but the taller the betterThat is a very rough description of what i would like to do. any input would help imensely. Thanks Hank

Might be easier to just buy a cuddy cabin boat.

I understand that i could get a differnt boat and this probably isnt the best boat to do it to but i am a commercial fisherman and i need a small boat as fish in really shallow water and spend most of my time in real tight ( like under 10ft of water most of the day) i just thought i could build a little cabin just like the menensha for pretty cheap. My boat isnt show quality or anything i kind of just want to slap something togehter and make a place to get out of the weather on my lunch break. I think that the menensha is a pretty cool little boat. that is almost what i am talking about but maybe a little less complecated. i.e. no toilet. I have a bunch of spare wood and fiberglass. all would have to do is buy longer throttle cables and steering cables.

What about a canvas forward shelter?

You could even build a Sakonnet front platform and take a nap under the canvas.

When you don't want the canvas, you obviously can put it down in the stowed position.

That seems like the most practical way to go about build a shelter to stay under for short periods of time........You could even fashion some tubing and buy some sunbrella and have it up in no time..............No worries about top heavy or balance.............
