I sometimes drop off my wife and daughter on the beach and then anchor a few feet off of the beach. I have been looking at keel guards and wonder if they are worth the money? It seems like a purchase I would like/need to make, but just wanted to see if anyone who has used them has had any problems. Thankyou for any input.

Here is a link from a previous inquiry about the topic. I to have wanted to install a keel guard, I just wish the price would drop a little.

I put on on my last boat and now my Montauk 170.
Both times the tape separated from the keel guard where it went over the edges of the strakes.

After complaining to Keel Guard, I was told I had to use some Flex set eposxy (that coats about $20!) to repair it, or I could pull the whole thing off and send it back.

After applying the epoxy, it's worked well.

Thankyou for the info Joe! Between what you have said and the roller on my trailer I may just wait on this purchase.
Thanks again.

I hope you didn't take that wrong; I like the product. I wouldn;t beach a boat with out one.

But there are some caveats to know...

Joe, I appreciate your honesty! I want to put one on my boat, but my triler has a roller right where the keel guard needs to go. I can either move the winch arm a few inches forward or backwards which I hate to do since the boat is perfectly balanced on the trailer.
Thanks again for your help!
Marty

I've put the keel guard on two of my boats and never had a problem. One trick I learned was to run a very thin bead of 3M 4200 or 5200 on the edge of the keel guard. I never had a problem with anything coming off

Hey FastFJR, thanks for your input! I am going to order one soon, I just need to re-adjust the roller on my trailer that is of course right where the keel guard needs to go.
Thankyou

Marty, i put one on my whaler also. i am in SC and use my boat in the rivers at the coast and in the lakes up state. it sure does save your hull. FASTFJR said it best. i too had to do that. As far as the front roller that is in the way, just drop it off. it is for loading anyway and the boat should not be resting on that roller while on the trailer.

If I am not mistaken, I believe Boston Whaler recommends the boat rest on the keel rollers.

Can anyone post where some pictures are of one of these installed on your boats?

Hey drh146, go to the personal pages. Scroll down to the 15' whalers. Look on the left for "Carom" or the author "Tedious". He did a great job putting one on his keel. The picture is towards the bottom and this is where I got the idea to get one myself. By the way, my Boston Whaler came from up your way out of Topsail Beach,NC.
Or try here.
