If is just your helm that is leaking, very easy. Just pull the wheel, and remove the plastic cover that covers the quad ring. Replace this seal and you are done.

All you really need is the quad ring, either 3/4" or 1", depending on the year of your helm.

Just in case you are not aware, most of these helms will leak a tiny amount of fluid from the fill/breather caps on real hot days.

Jorders -
Being a little more specific, you need a Teleflex Seastar replacement shaft seal. Some places stock them, but if not, can be ordered. AS mentioned, simple to install. See Teleflex Sea Star website for details on all of their seal replacement kits.

It's either Quad Ring 210, or 214, depending on what diameter shaft your helm has.

Teleflex goes by year of manufacture, there is no information on the unit itself. Go to their website and assume yours is a 1988, and you should be able to find any part numbers. You can also call their help line in Canada and get a person to help, number is on their website.

i have not heard back from Teleflex but i have verified that i have a SeaStar I helm which is pre 1990. I thought that someone said that the kit i needed was a model HS5151. can anyone verify that? john.

I don't know the kit numbers off hand, but if you buy the helm kit for $30 or so, you are wasting your money. The only part you need is the quad ring, the rest of the kit is useless. As I said before, all you need is the 1" quad ring, even at rip-off Teleflex parts prices, $4.

after talking with Teleflex Sea Star about my Sea Star I helm, they gave me the item number that i need. the quad ring is a 241 and is available at any hydraulics company. the cost was $2. thanks for everyone's input.
for reference- the quad ring 214 is the correct seal for a SeaStar I helm on a pre-1990 Outrage.
Tomorrow, i will begin replacing this o-ring. i have not done this before so if anyone has, i would love to know the difficulty level. i have tried to get diagrams on this helm without any luck.
1-do i need to remove the helm from the console to do this?
2- if not, by removing on the steering wheel, can i replace the quad ring by simply removing the three screws on the fact of the helm or is it more involved.
thanks again for everyone's help. your input has saved me a lot of money.
john.

No, you do not have to remove the helm, and yes, just pull the wheel, remove the 3 screws, remove the old ring, replace in reverse order.
