I recently inherited a 1969 (I think) 13 ft Sport. It was only registered 3 years and the last was 1974. It sat in a garage in Southern Calilifornia until I went down and pulled it up to Washington. The boat is flawless except for a bit of spidering in the top coat here and there. The original cushions are there and the wood is flawless. The 40 hp Johnson of the same era has less than 20 hrs on it and is immaculate.

Some engine tweaking as well as steering, some new wiring and it's ready to go. I will get it licensed tomorrow and next week is my maiden voyage.

I am very excited. I am guessing with the hull design that the 40 horse engine s going to make it feel scary fast?

I am hoping this will make me a die hard Whaler fan.

I just had to share. My wife is unimpressed.

Find a nice vintage 2 blade speed prop and she will really fly.

Congratulations Mike.

When you say cushions, this may not be a Sport as a Sport model didn't have cushions. Are you sure what model it is?

Take a look thru the photos and models here and let us know.

Hmmm. Not many pics there for the 13 ft. Steering wheel is in the center on mine. I'll have to take a pic and post it.

There aren't that many 13' models.

Sourpuss
Sport
Super Sport

Which model do you have by looking at the photos in the different categories?

I take that back.
If you have a 1969 model then it probably is a Sport with center steering...
What do you mean not many photos???
There is one model there that shows precisely a 1972 Sport with center steering...

Does your boat look like this or something different entirely?

You should be able to tell from the stencil number on the inside of the transom or the bow locker.

What a find! Well sorry your wife did not share the same over zealous joy, I guess that is not uncommon. Congrats on the boat, I too am curious so post some pictures and lets see the jewel.

I would need to see the consoles better. That is how you tell, correct?

Yes, there is no pic of the gls and only one each of the sourpuss and sport.

There are no rails on my boat. Cushions are after market then?

rails were optional on most models.

The Sourpuss model had (blue denim) cushions, seat backs, center steering and rails as standard equipment. If the boat does not have rails, it is not a Sourpuss.

How about a description of the boat? Color of the interior? Shapes of the splashwell? What is the stenciled serial number?

The GLS wasn't made until 1990 so you couldn't have that model.
Also look at the years the different models were available...

Actually, because you say it is a 1969, then it is most likely a Sport.
Once you find the stencil number that will tell you the year.

Good find whatever it turns out to be.

Welcome to "W/C", when I 1st got my "Whaler", I too got a huge "eye roll" from Mrs. MW, I pointed out the reason for buying a "Whaler", (safety for the new boater, IT CAN'T SINK), We went for a ride, and surprisingly she REALLY liked it. A few summer's ago I kept the boat out of the water to build my "Hot Rod" (Mustang GT). I literally got pushed against the wall and told "That Whaler better be in the water next summer", so don't be surprised if the wife all of a sudden loves the boat. In almost 20 year's the boat has NEVER let us down, kept everyone "safe", and has helped other "Non-Whaler" owner's by plucking them out of the Bay on "NUMEROUS" occassion's over the year's. Good luck with you new boat.

So, I took my boatout with my daughter. Ran like a dream for 10 min and the motor siezed!

Ugh.

When that little boat gets on a plane...it really goes.

It's too bad you didn't wait long enough for someone to give you advice on putting an engine back in service that had not been run in 35 years.

I recently found a similar situation to yours, an un-used like new 19 Outrage from 1975 with twin Johnson 70's (see Home page for photo). First thing I did, after making the trailer serviceable again, was haul it over to an OMC dealership and have them start and go over the engines. Both needed carb cleaning and rebuild work, plugs, impeller work and other adjustments inspite of the little use. Cost me $500/engine! But when I took her out, she ran like a champ.

My guess is that the seizure came from clogged carbs.

The engine SEIZED from having clogged carbs? Maybe it may have quit running because of clogged carbs, not seized. Does the motor crank over or does the starter just engage and nothing happens?

If your motor has truly seized....perhaps it's because the impeller was bad and you didn't get any water in the motor to cool it off. This is a very likely scenario as the motor has been sitting for a while. Impellers are just rubber and they come apart (degrade) over time.

I hope you can get her running agian soon and that the motor isn't really seized.

Only a few things will seize an engine, lack of lube, overheating or castrophic failure. Has your car ever run out of gas? Lack of fuel will make the engine stop running, not kill it.

That sounds like a great find you made with that mint condition 13 footer! My wife was happy as can be that I bought my 15' sport gls. She was used to riding on the center bench of a flat bottomed jon boat. She would get a beating everytime we went out and had no fun in that boat. Now she actually likes the smooth ride of my whaler. Like they say, if mama is happy, everyone is happy!
Good luck with your whaler and we all hope to see some picures.

This motor had less than 20 hrs on it. The carb was overhauled professionally a year ago. Impeller was running well but maybe I should have replaced it anyway. The correct ratio on the fuel to oil.

The impeller could have stopped running.

It ran like a champ for the few minutes it ran. I love how easy the boat got on plane.

I'll see this week.

Sorry to here that, I have had out boards engines sit for two to three years and run fine. A mercury I had one time ran good for the first six hours then over heated, after inspection of the water pump I found the impeller had broken off the blades inside that caused it to over heat I was just lucky I caught it before it seized. There is a possibility that it will still run now that it has cooled down if not frozen up. If not frozen check the compression. Again Sorry for your misfortune. Wish you best of luck with her.
