Wondering if any of you use a whaler for Ducking? Thinking of using my 16' whaler for the big icy water this winter. Just need to come up with some kind of blind and/or brush it out. Would prefer not to paint the whole thing, but not afraid to either. If you have any pics or suggestions let me know. If you must give your opinion on how I will destroy a great boat go ahead and get it off your chest...

Not sure I would paint mine, but I have seen some 13's painted. You can purchase camo fabric by the yard, bet you could rig a blind on the boat. Would you want the blind to be up at speed or only once you have reached your location? Do you want to be able to stand under the blind, or is crawling around good enough?
I know someone that has gone duck hunting off a 16 foot dauntlas, I am guessing that he used the bimini and forward shelter to create a blind and then covered the sides. Do you have a bimini for the boat? It could be the basic frame for a blind.

I don't have bimini. I was thinking of a sissor type frame that could be put down when underway. I'm thinking of being able to see out while sitting on the cooler and another hunter forward of console. I've been looking at the different camo matting and I think I can make something work out of PVC for a frame without painting the boat.

It's your boat do what makes it functional to you, I'm not a purist just practical. I would check other options though before becoming committed to painting camo. Are you going to use it for hunting only and how big or how many seasons during the year? What about checking with surplus store and see if they have any camo nets.

I used my 13 all last season. It did great! I made a scissor blind using 3/4 inch conduit and camo netting
Quackgrass http://www.quackgrass.net is also an option.
Because the 13 has such a low profile I just had the netting hang to the water line so I did not have to paint the boat camo.

My 1964 16' whaler looks just like the 13 only a little bigger. I was thinking the same thing about not even having to paint it. I'm going to rig up a frame out of pvc and try that grass netting. I hunt waterfowl from September all the way through March when I'll need the whaler to break ice and be very stable. I use it all summer too, so it'll just come out of the water for maintenance now!

Ya, no problem.
Its a real easy design to make. After shopping for the parts it takes less than an hour to complete. Have Fun!
