Anyone have any thoughts on mounting a 6" S/S on both the port and starboard side of the boat just behind the rear side rails. I would like to be able to use cleats instead of the rails. Especially on a rough day and being tied up to the dock. I don't like the idea of all tht pressure on those rails. Any advice would be appreciated.
Using the stern ski/lift eye's defiantely crossed my mind...I'm a big fan of cleats
Would you really shy away from mounting them in the hull or is it just personall preference?
Thanks as always for your time and advice!
Not sure how your stern eyes are configured (single or double bolt), but the product in the upper right on this link might be of interest. It can be mounted on the inside of the stern eye bolts without making any additional hull penetrations. Thought it was interesting...
I mounted 2 6 inch cleats forward port and starboard just before the raised deck and 2 midship on both sides of the seat. The gunwale sticks out a few inches. I drilled into the fiberglass and underneath the overhang I used a backing plate and used bolts thru the cleat and flat washers and nuts under the overhang. This works out good as I now have 4 cleats (2 on each side for tieing up. You can continue with the aft section to make 6 overall. I coated the cleats backing plate and fasteners with 3M 5200 and they are not going anywhere. I use the type of cleat that has 2 fasteners on the centerline. I use them for alongside boat towing.
