I am putting a 1995 Mercury 90ELPTO on my 1983 Montauk. Any input on what pitch prop would be best?

Thank you.

Jay

Hi Jay,
I am not knowlegable enough in this area to answer your question, but I know that the people who are will want more info. I have read alot and posted occasionally on this site for a year and the only snotty response I have received when asking a question is when I was asking about props. Therefore I thought I would jump in and help if I can. So here we go....What are the rpm's at wide open throttle? If it currently has a prop, what info do you have about it? What top speed do you want to achieve? What is the top speed now? Can you get any info about the gearing of your lower unit? Those are the types of things that will help someone here steer you in the right direction. Sorry that I can't be of more assistance. Good luck with the project!

I would use a 20" or 21" Mercury Laser II, engine mounted in third set of bolt holes.

Troy, I can not answer any of those questions lol!!! This is a remanufactured engine, and I have not had it on the boat yet, but I will ask about the gearing of the lower unit. This guy is a great mechanic, and I am pretty sure we will try a few out before we are done. As for top speed, I really don't care, on a flat calm day anything over 25 knots would be awesome for me. For anyone who thinks my knowledge is weak... you're right, I've grown up sailing, and this is a new toy for me. I was smart enough to get a Whaler!

Thanks Finnegan, I will pass that info on to my mechanic/rigger.

Thats funny Jay, because thats the same response I had. (Not being able to answer some of the questions.) Since you have a great mechanic who will work with you to try different props I'm sure you won't have any trouble finding the one that will work for your needs. Plus you now have a good suggestion from a WC member as to where to start. Have a great summer on your Whaler!

Engine redlines at 5500 RPM
Gear ratio is 2.33

a 20" prop should give about 44 MPH top end on a Montuak
a 21" prop should give about 46 MPH top end

Since you're not interested in speed, I would only have the engine mounted in the 2nd set of holes, and maybe use a cheap old aluminum prop for about $125 in 21" pitch. That's what BW factory installed on the classic Montauks equipped with 2-stroke Merc 90's. Look for about 44 MPH top end with that prop.

A 13-1/4" x 20" Laser II is a good prop for this boat/motor combination. 21" is too tall and the 19" Laser II might be a better fit if you're not after ultimate top speed.

A 13-1/4" x 19" Stiletto Advantage 4.25 will equal or surpass the performance of the 20" Laser II.
