I'm heading down to Delaware tomorrow to look at an Outrage. The boat has been for sale for some time and was wondering if anyone took a look at it yet. If you did, could you let me know why you passed on it? Thanks.

This seller has been trying to sell the boat since at least October 2008. I spoke to him back then. I can't remember the details, but they weren't good. I'm pretty sure the seller is a boat dealer/flipper. He was so desperate to sell that he was even willing to transport the boat to Long Island. I didn't see it in person, so who knows. I'm sure the seller will take much less than asking. Good luck.

Dan what would you consider a good offer for the boat?

If that boat/motors, are any good, $7000 sure sounds like a decent deal to me.

I think a good offer depends upon how much money you think you will need to get the boat to where you want it to be. We all know what we will ultimately be satisfied with. You can spend the money now or later. Figure new fuel lines, wiring, refinishing wood, new gas tank, engine work, trailer work, etc etc. I haven't seen the boat in person so it's hard to figure.

Well, I went to see the boat yesterday. Needless to say I did not come home with the boat. The boat was a Fla boat and appears to have sat in salt water for the last 20 yrs. The hull had some damage on the starboard side under the rub rail. It looks like the boat slammed into a piling or a dock. The gelcoat was gone and the fiberglass was exposed and slightly damaged. The teak was in bad shape and the front teak locker was held closed with a bungee cord. The wiring was a complete mess and would need to be rewired. The deck was removed and was not re-caulked. There were exposed gaps that water could enter into the hull. I'm not a Whaler expert, but there seemed to be some missing parts. There was no teak over the well where all the wiring went to the engines. The cooler was broken and cracked. The front hatch was not secured with a hinge and appeared it would fly off the boat if a large wave was encountered. The motors were rough. I took the covers off and the motors had a lot of corrosion. One of the motors would not start, possibly a starter issue. IMHO if the motors had that much corrosion on the outside I could only imagine what the inside looked like. The boat had many years of bottom paint and looked to need some attention. For those with imagination and a lot of time and money, you could turn the boat around. Unfortunately I have neither. I understand the price is attractive, but I felt I could easily invest that much or more to bring the boat back. Any questions please feel free to ask. Still looking.........Sad

It's number one a shame that someone lets a boat like that get so neglected and secondly that they misrepresent it when trying to sell it. I ran into the same type misrepresentations when I was looking for mine. Hopefully someone with some talent and time will bring her back to her rightful glory

Though some of that sounds normal and is an easy fix for an enthusiastic new owner, it sounds like a good move on your part. I know it's tough to pass on a boat. After all it is still a Whaler, and it's exciting to check one out.

I'm so glad I passed on a Outrage 18 before finding my Montauk. Corroded everything, Two deep 3' long gashes in the bow from a forklift or something evil. Broken teak everywhere. Rotten floor. Beat up Johnsons. Totally incorrect trailer. Dozens of screw holes and cheap rod holders fastened with drywall screws. He was locked in on 12K too. However, don't think for a second that I wasn't dreaming of cleaning that one up.

for the record,
the front locker on an 18 was never teak, it was always gelcoated. It also did not always have hinges, that was a later addition. The sump cover is easily lost, either on the highway or when the boat gets swamped.

It does sound like the boat needs lots of work, probably good that you passed. It's hard to work on a boat during the summer when you would rather be boating on it.

I hear ya Kamie. With my kids enrolled in every kind of event my wife could put her name on, I find I have little time for repairs AND boating. I have no problem with a boat needing some work, just don't have the time for major repairs.

I saw another boat: http://southjersey.craigslist.org/boa...41094.html

This one is in south NJ and the owner has a 225 Ficht on it. Heard a lot of bad things and good things about the fichts. I might go look at this boat. If anyone has seen this one please speak up.

Harley, I sympathize with you a 1000 percent. Like I wrote, I got a very bad vibe from the owner. It's gotten to the point where I can tell from a phone cal if the boat isn't worth the effort. The worst thing about this type of seller is that they always want you to come see the boat, as if you're going to be hypnotized or something. Every Outrage 18 I looked at was missing the teak over the well where all the wiring went to the engines. A replacement is only about $25. I don't think this seller was offering an attractive price at all. If a Boston Whaler doesn't sell quickly, there's usually problems.

Here's what I recommend every used boat buyer say to the seller, when the seller say's "all you need to do is sand the wood a little, tune up the motor, blah blah blah, and she'll be perfect and worth $2,000 more -- I'd do it but I don't have the time" -- tell this seller, okay, sounds easy, make her perfect and I'll pay you $2,000 more. Of course they'll never do it. And all these bad sellers go on the Internet and price their boat in perfect shape, and want that price. Don't get me started.

Harley, that 20 Outrage looks good. Go for a test drive and see if you like the way it handles. It's a much different boat from an 18 Outrage. I wonder why the owner got a new motor after only 2 years of owning the boat. Sounds like the owner might take 10 percent less. You will need a good tow vehicle.

I have a 2006 F-350, so towing is never an issue. The guy said the motor is original to the boat. I was looking at the older Outrages for the teak. Gotta love the classics. The 20' Outrage will ride that much different than the 18'?

This hull is considered the accu-track design. A marked improvement over the classic smirked design.

I would get the seller to send you photos.

While many FICH were good, there were specific years, models that were very, very bad. Do serious research to identify which group this motor is in.

Hi Phil, from what I've read so far, the 225 Fichts are ok. The 150/175's have the most problems. Mind you this is what I have read. I can't really comment on why there is a big difference. Worst case I'll offer the guy a price that I can't refuse. If he accepts, I wouldn't regret buying it.

When you find the one that you REALLY want, you'll be glad that you walked away from the last one, you did the "smart" thing.

Thanks MW. Anything happen with the 13'? I'm really looking for a 1984-1990 Outrage. Figured if I find a real cheap 13', I could keep most of my budget liquid ready in case I find my dream boat. I have seen a few 13's for $2k. At that price I should be able to sell quick when the right boat comes along but still have something to get out with. Amazing how something like this can wear a person down. Sad

That 13 is still sitting there, I didn't see it lately but, our agent's in the "Whaler spy network" told me that it was moved behind a car in the driveway (like that's gonna fool us). CoolCoolCoolCool

When I bought my 25' Outrage it had twin 1999 150 Fichts on it. I made an offer with and without the engines. I paid to take the old motors off and towed the boat home. I also looked a few 26' Outrages but just liked the look of the older hulls.
