Hi,

I currently own a 1982 15' Sport with a Johnson 50, but am looking to purchase a 1978 17' Montauk with a Johnson 90. My primary concern is what advantages might the Montauk have over the Sport or vice versa? My Sport seems a little "shallow" especially when I take my 7 and 4 year olds fishing. Primary use is fishing the bays and kelp in San Diego area. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tony

I can not compare these two boats, but from previous expirence two feet of length for a boat is a huge difference.....more room

Several things about the Montauk beside the 2 foot difference.
1. You can stand up and drive which makes the boat feel much larger than the 15'.
2. The Side Rails are much higher for more safety from falling out.
3. Complete 360ยบ fishing or walking around.

like mr Joe Kriz said, u can stand up and drive, its easier when fishing, i have a montauk hull and fish regularly with it, its wider too and that makes it more stable out at sea.
i fish in 5+ foot waves and the boat handles great, i even had the boat in 8 foot waves and still it handles great.
it think the montauk is a better option for uWink
and you'll get more speed out of a montauk with a 90 then with a 15 with a 50hp.
the montauk is a safe boat
hope this helps,

I dearly love my 15 footer, but with a 4 and 7 year old I think you are much better off for their safety in the higher sides of the 17 footer
