I have been looking for some time now for the right boat. I have a 2002 Grady White 208 Adventure and while it is all that I expected, I find myself still searching for another Whaler. As I've seen on this site, a lot of people here have more than one boat. I figured that a small Whaler would compliment the Navy I am trying to build.

I am looking for a 9'-13' project that would not be out of my abilities. I've seen a few boats so far that have not met my expectations or were too much money.

I am now looking at a 1990 13' that ended up on the "rocks" after a storm. I have not seen the boat but I am told it will need some fiberglass work to the starboard side as the foam is exposed. I have done fiberglass work once in my life and I am not bragging about the final result. I'm not sure what to offer for the boat (it comes with a trailer, no motor or controls). The wood needs to be refinished, but I'm told the interior is fairly good shape. The guy is asking $1500 OBO.

I guess I'm asking for some insight as to what to look for or avoid, what can be fixed and what can't. I just don't want to get in over my head on a project. Still, I long to own another Whaler.

That seems a little high for a rig with significant damage and no motor...***UNLESS*** the trailer is awesome. I would say if the the trailer looks like it needs any work at all you wouldn't want to pay more than $1k or so. Most decent 13's (5-8 out of 10) go for $3k give or take. Break it down and there are basically three segments that you have to evaluate. #1 the hull, #2 the motor, and #3 the trailer; some would make #1 and #2 interchangeable. Usually the 25-40 horse motor on the back is worth somewhere around $1k, (assuming its an older motor) split up the other $2k over the hull and the trailer. If its worth it to you and you think that the damaged hull plus trailer is worth about that, then go for it. I think you would be best off to look for a hull that is incomplete as far as interior goes, or without motor without significant damage. You could probably find one around $1500 to $2000 and having spent $500 to $1000 more in the beginning may save you equally as much in headaches if you have a wet hull or lots of glass work. You will be able to find some sort of patch, or fill or something that needs to be done on almost any whaler you find. If you think you have found one that doesn't need it, look under the rub rail and it probably does.

I Think that you can find a better deal, there's a LOT of Whaler's on "Long Island", not far from you. Keep "Huntin", if I see anything, I'll pass it on to you.

Thanks guys. Like I said, I'm waiting for the right boat and I am in no rush to part with my hard earned cash. Thanks MW for keeping your eyes open.

Harley,
I might be out of line, but I think that price is WAY too high, unless the damage from the rocks is very small. When I read it I visualized a large area missing glass. If it is small punctures and easy to repair then I think it's worth a look. Try to pick it up to see how much it weighs. It might be full of water.
My suggestion regardless of the worth of this one is to look some more. Jaxed.com is a great resource and easy to use. Good luck.
Mike
