Recently bought a 1995 Dauntless 17 DC with a 1997 Mercury Mariner 115 HP 2 Stroke (serial number 0G468238). I had the boat in a marine shop in December for some repairs and winterizing. The shop people repaired the fuel gauge for me as requested. I asked them to check the trim angle gauge also. They told me that this particular Mariner engine did not support a trim gauge. They also told me that they had not seen an after market sensor that would work with this engine. Does this sound right? I can see that the gauge does have wires connected to it but have not traced them down. What does a trim angle sensor look like?
I would guess that if the boat has a trim gauge on it then there has to be a sensor of some sort on it, unless this is a different motor that was installed earlier.
If you trace the wire back to the motor there should be a lever that pivots up and down. They often get stuck and you need to lubricate it and work it up and down until it moves freely. There should be a spring on it to make it close.
