I am looking at a locally listed Whaler on craigslist as a candidate for a project. This is a 17' Montauk according to the owner, a 60's to late 60's model.

http://savannah.craigslist.org/boa/1056128057.html

The listing has it there for $1200 but I cant really say that I have too much boat buying experience for this type of situation, and am looking for guidance and suggestions from the community as to what would be a reasonable amount to pay for this boat, to expect to pay.

Thanks!

That's always a tough one without knowing how much work the hull and trailer will need.

I can tell you this. The first Montauk was not made until 1973 so this boat was never a Montauk.
Of course, you could make it look like one if your desire by adding the correct console and correct RPS.

Well that's something, I didn't even think of that!

I did post this knowing full and well it is a difficult and almost subjective question to answer, mainly I just want to get a ballpark estimate on it.

Supposedly, I say that since I have not yet had the chance to get out and look at it, but the owner tells me that it is not waterlogged and so the hull is, by and large, dry. Also added was the fact that it had spent some time in the sun - fairly evident from the cracking, I think! Wink

As far as the trailer goes, it is able to be moved as-is, though will need some maintenance for anything beyond the short-term.
