Finally got started...I first thought I would just restore the gel coat but after closer inspection I have decided to re-gel or paint. Way too many minor fixes and holes to fill. The areas in the pictures are typical of what the rest of the repairs will require. I will begin drilling and filling holes with marine tex? I will then be using an orbital sander and 100 grit to prep for paint? I was unsure about the green on top of the transom but after doing some research it appears to be factory? Does this need special attention?

Yes the green area visible at the top of the transom is factory and is not a defect.

The green is the mold joint where the two halves come together.

Thanks, one less thing to fix..
Today I continued removing hardware and cleaning. There are way more holes than I care to fill but.....There is going to be even more when I drill out all the rivets that were put in the rub rail? Man That thing was not going anywhere...
I have no idea what i doing but next im going to start on the console, this should give me all the practice I will need to complete the project....I know im a little early for this but Im going to spray with Interlux perfection.
After removing everything, I really liked the wide open deck of this 17' model. It crossed my mind to leave the seat and console out, put a 100HP tiller with a bench seat across the back and a BIG bait well right in the center!

The forum section is not designed for too many photos.
I have moved these to your personal page where they belong.
Thank You

It's never too early, just "Keep Going", don't get wrapped up in too much right away (easy to do), get her ready for the water this summer.

JPB,By looking at your photo's..your boat doesn't look that bad to re-gel coat the WHOLE boat.As for "the green line" I too have a pet peave with that.It a factory issues.
IMHO try buffing, remove all hard ware,3M heavy duty compound use a heavy duty buffer(De Walt 449)you'll be surprise with the result. As for the little drill, deep scratches, find your local marine guy to color match gel-coat to patch.Don't forget to wax that baby(last chores to do)Hope that helps!need anything just shoot me an email.
Good Luck,
Richard

I have a lot of different ideas but more than likely I will keep it original except for a leaning post and bait well.....

Just a suggestion.
A Montauk is usually worth more at resale time.
I would try and find an original RPS and keep your boat a Montauk.
Here is a photo of a refinished RPS that was original to the Montauks.

FYI: Georgia
The Boaters World in gwinnett co. is going out of business. I got interlux perfection, interlux primer, and other items today for 25% off. They will be increasing the mark downs until everything is gone......
