First off, I have a 16ft 7 in. Boston whaler with hull id reading 3A6908, any idea of what model this could be?
I have been told this boat is a classic and should be restored the "right way" but considering this is the first boat I have owned, and am only 17, I do not know the "right way" to restore a boat, so any information at all, relevant or not will be great.
Also, I installed marine carpet in the hull because the paint was worn, chipped to hell, and needs resurfaced; does anyone have experience with marine carpet? Does it hold up fairly well, or will it be a paint in the @ss later on, if so would it be a good idea to tear out the carpet and repaint the hull? And if i were to repaint, would anyone be so kind to provide me with detailed process instructions, and correct materials to use.
Another thing, I painted the center console with regular primer and white automotive paint, will this paint be substantial, or should i re-prep, and use a different style of paint? If so, what paint, and any application techniques you know of?
Last, I am contemplating the idea of installing a casting deck in the rear of the boat in order to cover the fuel tank, provide dry storage and possible a live well, and increase fishing room. Is this a good idea, or will it for lack of a better word "debase" the boat if it really is a "classic"

Your boat is shown as being made after 1972.
We would need to know the number on the metal tag if it is still there.

From everything I can gather from looking at this website for a few months, What ever you do to your boat is really fine as long as you take the time to do it well. It's really doesn't matter what other people tell you as far as asthetics, because after all it is your boat. If you are building a functional fishing rig like me, do it. If you want to show it at a boat show, than a factory restoration may be neccessary. My 16 and a half came stock with a fiberglass casting platform in the front and back, so this was in the time frame they were making the bass boat.
Wow! wasn't expecting such quick responses, I will post some pictures towards the end of the week, and thanks for the advice s tumpfatc. Any ideas on the construction of the casting deck? Possibly some designs, or ideas of a material list. Also, really concerned about the console paint, any ideas there?
First we really need to know the year so we can recommend a forward casting platform.
I would also look through the OEM Parts Photo section and start seeing photos of original parts.
