Ok, as you can see by the picture I put a pretty nice size gash in the keel of the 13' last night...good thing caught a couple redfish or this would have ruined my night...I see it as a setback now Grin ...I load the trailer the same way I always do, but I saw it go a little crooked, and BAM..scratch city! Im not too sure where it hit but it's happened before just not to this extreme...i think it hit the bolt last night but it has also scraped that galvanized bracket that holds the roller. (i know it scraped that cuz i saw the white paint on the bracket where it hit). Should I cut that bold off with a dremel or something? Should I get a wider roller? Did i back trailer up to far? After i fix this i dang sure don't want this to happen again! Thanks for your help guys

At least you are out in the boat.

That roller bracket looks like a invitation to gouge the keel. Yikes.

You might cut the bolt at the end of the nut and grind down the corners of the bracket.

Better yet, install a bracket like the one below using U bolts.

Thanks Phil T for your advice...I just went and looked at my trailer...im not too sure that style you pic'd would work on my trailer...I have that style for the back 2 rollers, but this one in question is the front one and it's right where the trailer starts to "V" from the tounge...here's a pic of the setup the middle roller is exactly the same as the back one...They to me look like keel scrrapers too!!! I think I should go wider like the one you pictured, it looks wider than mine i have now..

Sorry 'bout the photo. As you know it comes in different widths.

Just my opinion:

I have never liked the small rollers on the rear of the trailer. I convinced my brother (1984 13 ft ) to change his setup.

Get a nice wide one (8"-12" wide) rather than the 4" for the back and take the existing bracket and mount it in the front, a little farther back then where you have it now. If you have it on the center member, it will be in a better position for the hull and for attaching to the member.

If this is not clear, I can doctor your photo and post it.

please do, because im confused how to mount that bracket you have pic'd too the front part of the trailer? It looks like it needs a "cross" bar going side to side as opposed to front to back?

Woops. I just realized a big mistake. I posted the wrong bracket.

Here is the bracket I am suggesting for the bow. They come in different widths for the various sized tongues.

Here is where it came from

I still think the rear most roller should be wide for ease of loading.

That looks like a real nice red. Do you have the same restrictions on length as we have in Florida. Where do you find them in San Antonio.
BTW just cut the bolt flush with the nut, and you`ll be OK It looks like you just took off the gelcoat.

They are stocked into the powerplant lakes here...the restrictions for freshwater are 20" min. NO max...I usually throw anything over 30" back, but I have been needing fish so i kept her yesterday..she was 33" 14lb's... As long as that front keel roller comes in wider roller widths...otherwise i don't see any real advantage over the one i have if i cut the bolt? It looks way deeper than gelcoat...i can see the fiberglass strands in there...Im just going to clean it up a little then marine tex it.

Wow bad rash you have there. I also think you need to look at the entire set up of the trailer. I do not see how long bolt in the picture could have caused the gash as it is on the wrong side of the keel. Most boats have the long roller that Phil pictured first on the rear of the trailer. This is to protect the keel as it is deep in the water when approaching the trailer. I think you might need do some work on the placement of your bunks to help drive the boat on the trailer. They may need to be a bit longer to guide the boat a little further. I also helped a friend with my prior 15 footer add short bunks to the front of his trailer. A short set at the front makes a true drive on type trailer. Most small galvanized trailers are not built to actually drive to the bow stop. Although most of us do it I think it is due to having the trailer far enough out of the water that the bunk boards hold the boat straight on the trailer. This bracket is easy to use to turn a 2x up on. Run two boards to support the keel and help drive the boat straight on the trailer.

I have already replaced the back roller with a 12" one and I already bought the hardware for the middle roller to be 12" aswell just need to get it on there...Im also going to purchase that keel roller that PhilT pasted above, and move it forward a little like he suggested. I think with the 12" rollers i shoudl be good there is ALOT more room for error...I am going to move my "guide-ons" a little closer so they hug the boat more so it can't slide side to side as much...your right bake, it might not have been the bolt but it was either the bolt or the bracket holding the roller...that's the only thing there it can hit on and my buddy saw it scrape on that roller somewhere. Hopefully this will solve my problem...Im also going to not back the trailer down as far...should help...i HOPE!

jsb -

To make loading effortless, move the guide on's so they are 1" from the hull.

Here is what mine look like:

actually...if you look at the way that bracket is, I am just "turning" the "L" brackets around and it makes it 12" wide so I am just going to get another 12" roller and have all 3 be 12"...I think that'll work great! I think setup like this I would have to hit it very crooked to do damage...LOL... You think so Phil???

You'll need to move your guide rails to be within about 1-2 inches from each side of your boat when it is centered on the trailer. Believe me when I tell you, these guide rails are worth their weight in Gold, especially when trying to load your boat by yourself with a slight cross wind.
