New member here - first let me say this is a great place. Plenty of info that has been helpful to me already. I recently purchased my first Whaler, it's a 1970 17' Katama. Overall it's in great shape and needs very little to be really nice. I'll get some pics up soon.
The motor on it is a Evinrude 100XP and the mount is covering the splash well drain hole. If water gets in there now, there's no way for it to come out (without bailing). My question: is it safe to drill and add another drain hole in the transom out the back of the splash well, or will I be weakening it and eventually causing other problems? I was going to go to the farthest and lowest point away from the motor and add a new hole.
Any advice would be appreciated..
Thanks in advance...

You should be fine, drill it out 1' and slide a piece of 3/4 pvc into the hole seated with 5200.
Pay attention to what kind of wood you pull out, you should have a great transom sample.

You don't need a new drain hole, you need to raise your motor thus unblocking the through hull drain.
You'll wind up with a boat that performs better after this is done.
Do you have a photo of your current engine mounting? I'm actually perplexed why an Evinrude 100XP would block the drain hole at all. That was a common motor on that hull.

My 1982 Newport 18 has patial interference between the 91 Johnson 140 and the drain hole as well. The engine height seems to be correct. I was going to grind a little of the engine mounting plate to clear the drain while I am restoring this boat.

Ran into a similar problem with an engine mounted to my 1973 Cohasset. First determining that no hydralic or structual damage would occur, I removed enough metal to clear the drain tube and provide adequate drainage of the motor well.
Worked for me.

Be careful grinding or drilling holes in engine brackets that have trim-n-tilt. Many have integrated oil passages inside the brackets.

Thanks again for the replies everyone.. I got a chance to do some cleaning on the boat today and took a couple of pictures.. Anther good cleaning and some touch up and I will be able to take this thing out and catch some fish!! Anyhow, the pics show the plate behind the Cylinder covering the hole. The plate is about 4 inches tall, the drain hole is about dead center and the motor is all the way down, I don't think I can move it up enough to get past it either. I may end up drilling into the transom anyhow.
Please take a look and again any advice is appreciated..
Have a great week.

I would raise the engine 2 holes (top bolts in the 3rd hole from the top and then assess the situation.
You want the anti-cavitation plate to be above the keel by 1 - 1 1/2 inches.

The solution to your dilemma is very simple. Do as Phil and I have suggested and raise the motor. It is too low as it is now.
No need to fool with new drain tubes at all.

I got the motor raised last weekend. No matter which hole is the top, the drain is still covered by the backing plate from the motor. Since it (the motor) was off, I cleaned it all up back there and it looked like the backing plate for the hydraulics was set back by about 1/8 inch to allow water to get through the hole and run between the transom and plate.
So I did clean it, and removed some (a bunch of) gunk that was caught in that 1/8 inch area, put it back together and now it drains - Thanks to everyone for the replies... Now the engine is at the right height too...
Case closed...
Thanks again..

What kind of performance change have you found since raising the motor?

None yet, I'm still getting the boat ready for the water. I bought it just before Christmas and have not yet taken it out. I raised it on the advice of Tom W & Phil T.....
Hope to give it test ride soon.
Thanks.
