Hey guys,
last year I replaced one of my (two) exhaust "y's".(inboard)
The original? was a fiberglassish looking thing and the one I had built to replace it was brass.
shortly after I noticed white smoke (steam?) from that engine.
Is this the cause of the new exhaust system, or could it be a internal problem?
Thank you in advance.

Thanks for the reply Jeff,
1-its coming from the exhaust
2-white
3- I dont notice any odor
I only see it when underway, idling at the dock there is no smoke at all coming from the exhaust.
Thanks again

Seaduck,
I guess you have a water cooled exhaust. Is it possible one side is not getting enough water cooling?

hhhmmmm,

Well maybe the brass is just getting to hot and water is contacting it somewhere creating the steam. Fiberglass and composites are insulators where metals transmit heat.

Did you check to make sure all of your exhaust hoses and clamped down good and tight. There could be steamy exhaust escaping from a fitting.

Do you have any pictures? That would help.....

Do not suppose you have any why to measure exhaust gas temps (EGTs)? That could tell you if one side of the engine is not getting enough water to cool.

Could it be a leaky head gasket on the engine? In the old days a car that emited white smoke(steam) usually needed a new head gasket or (heaven forbid) a new head.

Thanks fella's for the replies.
Frostbite, I have not checked the raw water pump yet this year (thanks you reminded me to get on it)

Jeff, I was kinda thinking (hoping the same thing)
No, no exhaust temp gauge.
As for pics, I cant seem to post them but the mods are helping me figure it out.

Liteamorn, I dunno but it's food for thought

Well now I'm going to try to figure out an electrical isuue that popped up today (always something)

It is possible for a head gasket to go and not have milky oil, or only be leaking enough to have all the water burn up in the combustion chamber.

I would do a compression and leak down test, along with reading the spark plugs just to be sure

A leak down test not only measures compression, but it also measures how fast the compression "leaks out" of the cylinder past the rings. It is an excellent indicator of how tired your engine is
