Banana Hulls and trim tabs.

Since that I am the proud owner of an Outrage 19'4" Classic 1975
It has come to my mind to install trim tabs on the stern section of this Classic.
Now,
I have heard that from the shape of it's stern section;
That the 21 has no need for trim tabs..
Would the trim tabs be an asset for the 19 for stability and balance?

The 19' Outrage/Revenge hull of the '70's is probably the most fuel efficient and easy to plane of any Outrage hull Whaler ever designed. Trim tabs would be a waste of money and not needed.

While Larry is correct about these hulls being able to easily plane and with little effort however, after installing tabs on my 22 Outrage I would highly recommend them. While it was great to get the boat up on plane and stay there at only 8-9 mph I will say I found them must helpful in adjusting the trim of the hull for the sea conditions. The boat was a completely different boat in all condition after the tabs were added. If you are looking for a set I HIGHLY recommend getting Lencos. They are the easiest to install and more much more effectively than the Bennetts.

Here's 8 Mph,on plane ! In the 460 hours I've thusfar operated my Banana hull the thought of trim tabs has never entered my mind.

Nope ! Don't need em at 55 Mph either ! Serge, your hull is alittle different but not much,I would expect your hull to preform much like mine.

I did not think I needed them either however, my father bought a set for me on my birthday so I figured way not. After having them I could not imagine operating the boat without them. Agreed that these old shallow deadrise hulls can plane at much lower speeds than the large Outrages (my 22 was 14 - 16mph min) however, I found the tabs most useful in rough sea conditions. Being able to adjust the attitude of the hull made for a calmer ride.

I happen to prefer them to compensate for the boat "leaning" due to weight, wind or whatever. I never really used them to achieve low speed planing.
As far as my 19 - I am considering adding them as part of the restoration. I will have twin power and it will not be counter rotating due to lack of availability in lower HP motors - I think they will help to keep the boat from "leaning" (sorry I do not know the proper term for that).

You know I really never considered trim tabs till I rode in a friends PathFinder. We were getting skinny and he cranked those things down and jacked the motor up -- we where just sliding across the water. I had never seen a 22 footer with a deep V get that shallow. Very cool. I also think it makes a lot of sense to be able to pitch the boat for different situations.
I am still up in the air on whether to put them on my new restore but leaning in that direction.

I was thinking of the trolling tabs- They are trim tabs with trolling motors attached... Pretty cool... but pricey.

Scott - I have seen those and they are to large for my taste. I also talked to a dealer in Houston who said they were a bit tough to operate.

I can't stay on plane below 20 mph with my v20. I'd love to be able to stay on plane at 10 mph.

The original question was edited by you as you well saw. We don't delete text unless it is inappropriate.
The edit button in the forums has been turned on since we started this site.
We thought it would make things easier for the member to be allowed to edit their own post(s) for typos or other types of errors or additions. This is based on the honor system.
Generally, when a member deletes their original post, we delete the thread. That seems to be only logical.
If members don't want the "Edit" button feature, we can surely turn this feature off. Let us know.
As far as photos in the forums or on this site in general,we have simplified things.
No photos in the forum area...
We have created several new areas for photos to be used by members including their;
Members Personal Pages
Members Photo Albums
Members Project Albums
Whaler Model Specifications
All photo areas have a particular and specified use as we can see from the titles.
None of the admins here can see everything. Some things might get by us in the beginning but eventually will be noticed and handled to the best intentions for this site.
Hopefully this thread can get back on track or at least be answered and provide members in the future some insight for trim tabs on a banana.
