I have a 200 yamaha 70 hp on my classic 1975 Montauk. My issue is that between 700 and 1400 rpm the motor shakes so bad that it is rediculous. When the boat is backed into the water tank it does not do it, only under way. It actually feels like it is running on one cylinder. Her is my problem. the local Yamaha dealer can't fix it.
The dealer just told me that 3 cyl. motors run rough! This thing is shaking so much between 800-1400 that it has shaken all of my electronic connections loose.
If this motor is supposed to shake this much, why would anyone buy one. I have a 25 hp yam. with 3 cyl. and it doesn't vibrate at all.
I personally believe it is a fuel supply problem if there are low speed jets in the carbs.
These are supposed to be good motors and the local dealership, Ronnies Marine in Aransas Pass T. is supposed to be a good dealer.
So I have a problem in that this dealer has a supposed good reputation and I have a motor, 70 hp yamaha, which is supposed to be a good motor.
I don't know what to do, the authorized dealer is unable to fix a supposes good motor.
I have always had positive experiences getting my 1995 90hp Yamaha serviced at Ronnie's in Aransas Pass. You could contact Dennis at Bernie's Boats & Motors in Victoria (361 573 7809 berniesboats.com) and describe the problem to him.
Make sure you tell him the problem does not show up in the shop tank running between 700 and 1400 rpm.
Just like Doctors with Mechanics if you do not like the first opinion seek another.
Did this just start occuring in the past couple hours of use or has it been this way for a long time?
There could be a number of things that is causing this to occur only under load. Some are fuel supply related and others are ignition related.
If it were me I would start with checking the plugs and cleaning them. This is the easiest and cheapest thing you can do. Also, what kind of plugs are you running in the motor? I only run NGK surface gap plugs in all of my motors. I have just found them to be bullet proof. While I have had many other brands run poorly in my past motors I have never had an issue with the NGKs.

Thanks for the feedback ya'll. I have replaced the plugs , same make and # that came with it. Last year the bottom carb jets were cleaned. I have put sea foam in my fuel since.
If there are low speed fuel jets in these carbs then it seems like that would be the problem. But sitting on the trailer, backed into the tank, it runs just fine. When the boat is in the water, 800-900 rpm smooth running. 900-1500 the whole boat is vibrating horribly. Over 1500, runs great!
I just need to get a person from the dealership to actually experience the problem in the water.
This dealer and this motor have great reputations. I will take it back over there and get someone to go run it with me. Surely they can figure this out
I have found if you can identify the symptoms and the exact conditions. The mech can correct it without wasting time and not "throw parts" at the problem.
I had an engine problem this spring. Learned the conditions when it happened and what the problem was. After getting advice here and from a Yamaha guy. I wrote up a summary of: the engine history. Service done on the engine to date, the problem and when it happened. Gave them 2 copies.
The service desk person and the mech both appreciated it and said it helped a lot.
Bernie's in Victoria is great or you could try my dealer in Rosenberg, Kroll's Marine. I live in Austin and make the 2.5 hr drive to Rosenberg whenever I have a problem where I need someone I trust. Both should solve your problem. I have had excellent dealings with both. Paul
