Well, I took advantage of two 50+ degree days in February to make progress on the boat. First order of business was to wash the outside and inside and see what the full scoop was. Once I finished washing the outside she went from a dull grey color to almost white which was nice to see. The inside when from blue black to blue in lots of places. There is plenty of gelcoat work to do including a new place in the stern which if I push on it, just bubbles water.

Decided to test some glue removal options. I had a product called Oil-Flo 141 from doing some inside tile work. This was the first product I decided to try. I tilted the bow down and used a stiff brush to spread it across the bow area, left it for an hour or so checking occasionally to ensure the gelcoat wasn't turning to liquid. I washed it off and it really softened the glue. I spread it on again and left it overnight. Sunday morning, got up and scrubbed a lot of the glue off, then took the power washer to the gelcoat. I applied the oil-flo once more to the entire non-skid and let sit. I scrubbed occasionally and spread the liquid where it pooled in the center of the boat. In some places where I couldn't scrub off the glue, I used a 1 inch brass brush chucked into the drill. It didn't seem to harm the gelcoat and really cleaned the remaining glue off. I have plenty still to do but here is a before/after shot so far.

Thanks Mike,
At some point early Sunday, I tried to figure out what possessed me to purchase a boat with carpet glue on the non-skid. It looks a lot better in the pictures although the before and after shots amazed me. Still lots of glue around the edges and I'm not sure yet how getting it off the bow and the sides will work, but that's what a project boat is, a project Smile

Henry,
we could always race now while you have the advantage. If your going to race, it helps to have an actual motor on your race boat, which currently mine is lacking.

Yours is in much better shape than mine. You should be able to wash and go, minus the missing engine that is.

I found a couple more questionable spots, one in the port stern corner, soft. A few screw holes just in front of that that ooze water if I push on them. The laundry list keeps growing.

Kamie, thats the problem with laundry...it always keeps growing until you wash everythingSmile And then it happens all over again! But if you keep expanding your project lists, we won't see much of you again this boating seasonSad

I plan on being out on my boats even more this season, shooting for over 75 trips!
I have no time to loose and you never get those days back once you loose them!

stop finding work to do! do more boating!!Smile)

I don't plan on putting the 13 in the water this year, my guess is that will happen spring 2009, so there is plenty of time to boat. Now if home/boat projects were the reason I only put 25 hours on the E-Tec last year that would be an easy fix. Alas, they were not the reason although this year they may contribute.

Hey Kamie,

Just curious, what's your hull #? Have you had the chance to run it by Chuck Bennett for a "born on date" and shipped to location?

I'm toying with the idea of assembling a list of white hull/blue interior 1972 Sports.

Project is looking good! Keep the pics coming!

It takes a special kind of person to see what we see in these boats. All that elbow grease seems like the most normal thing in the world to me, but most of the people who have seen me in the driveway re-glassing and sanding this little boat think I'm crazy.

I can see a great boat waiting to come out in your photo. Looks great. Enjoy!

When I see a mistreated and neglected Old Whaler it makes me wish I could adopt everyone of them, restore them and then give them a good home. It's almost like child abuse Wink Looks like you've got one that will be super when you get it completed Grin

Crazy huh ? "Boston Whaler" boats have saved more lives than any other brand of boat ! You'd be "CRAZY" if you went out on the water in anything less. Fire, Police, and Emergency services almost always use "Boston Whaler", there's a lot to be said for that !

Kamie, looking good! Have you tried Goof Off or Oops to remove the carpet glue?

72Sport: Boy, you've got a beauty there!
