Friends, I love my (new to me) 270 Dauntless. However, when I'm fishing the flats here in southwest Florida I'm constantly looking for rod holders up towards the bow and near the bow. The original design is great but lacking in the rod holders. Has anyone cut into the gunnel and added rod holders to this model or similar? Any issues to look out for in particular (stress cracks)? Overall thoughts on the matter are welcome.
Great boat! Do you have bow rails? If so I'd be inclined to add rail-mounted holders before cutting into the gunwales.
If not, how about that flat spot just aft of the flip-up backrests and in front of the speaker? My Montauk has two on each side in that spot -- except they double as a place to stick the backrest and they have built-in drains. That's another reason I'd go for rail-mounted holders, so you don't have to worry about water collecting in the base.
